So, as I mentioned yesterday, July is National Hot Dog Month. Due in no small part to astronomical consumption numbers on the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the official designation dates back to 1957.
How astronomical are those numbers? Pretty serious. As a nation, if we live up to expectations, well down about 150 million franks on Independence Day alone. Never mind the rest of the summer cookouts in July. Thats enough to stretch from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. over 5 times.
Of course, if youre not familiar with the proper technique and customs of hot dog consumption (no more than 5 bites!), the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council is happy to give you a tutorial in their etiquette video below. Now, Ive mentioned my enthusiasm for ketchup in the past, but I have to agree with them on this one. If youre an adult, theres no justifiable excuse for putting the red stuff on your frank.
See what?
No hot dogs for us this weekend - pulled pork Piedmont style, grilled burgers on the pontoon boat, and then beer can chicken!
Gonna do a beer can chicken this weekend. Yum!
Beer can chicken...First I’ve ever heard of it. Now I gotta do it.
Beer Can Chicken - Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm.
Excellent!!!
Now don’t these beat a hot dog? Clearly more work (I’ll be putting the pork butts on the smoker around 10PM tonite), but man, it’s worth it IMHO.
Yuck.
I hate ketchup on my hotdogs.
You’re gonna like it!!!
How’d they fit the bun, the oven to bake it into one of their dinky kitchens? ;)
I'll take my Independence-dog with chili and cheese, please!
