Ubuntu/Lime
vanity | 07/01/10 | Me

Posted on 07/01/2010 5:00:14 PM PDT by Mmogamer

I was looking at the Ubuntu and Lime linux threads, I would like to try using linux. Which is best for a complete noob such as myself? Lime seems to be easier? How do I go about getting it going after a download?

Just wondering, heh.

Thanks

So you just have one machine?

Knoppix.

Download the ISO, burn it to CD, then boot it.

After it boots, hit ctrl-alt-f1 and type in KNOPPIX-INSTALLER

I second the Knoppix Live CD option - it will get you running linux w/out installing an O/S.

Ubuntu and Suse are great and easy to install. Gentoo is a bit more advanced.

Would a flash drive work instead of a cd? Just asking.

I've never done, but it's possible -> link

The catch is, your computer BIOS must be able to boot from USB. I believe most newer BIOS versions are capable of booting from the USB partition.

If you can boot from CD, the live knoppix distro is slick - I've used it for a utility for accessing system resources...very handy.

(Also, one might want to increase the timeout in /etc/grub/grub.conf to 10 or so seconds so that you have time to specify a different kernel when you boot.)

Sorry, that should have been "/boot/grub/grub.conf", not "/etc/grub/grub.conf".

I gotta give Mint a bump. I have installed it on three boxes, two of which were for couples in their 60’s with no Linux knowledge at all. It has been several months and no problems.
Switching to Linux was so much easier than I thiught, wish we had done it years ago...

It’s ok but there’s a really weird purplish boot screen on the latest release (10.4) which seems vaguely like some tele-tubbies symbol for some reason.

And they removed the Admin option on this version to choose your boot screen image.

Oh and GIMP (a sort of Linux photoshop) has been removed from the install version - though it’s available as a download.

I’ve downloaded Unbuntu and am booting it off a thumb drive, but I’m having issues installing a wireless device driver. Can you help?

Can't help much...haven't done that,...all my stuff is desktop...I assume you have a laptop?

Which maybe has a broadcom chip for the wireless...they don't seem to worry much about doing Linux drivers....

Guess what I would suggest is that you identify what the wireless chip is and then go to the Ubuntu forums and ask for some specific help on drivers for that chip.

I'll throw this out from the Forum...hope it might be useful:

Can someone point me to the following...

A comparsion what comes on Windows XP and higher as std equipment and what the Linux/Unix systems (Ubuntu Mint) have as a direct replacement.

My fear is that once I make the switch I would be forever looking for free-bee or purchased add ons to get the entire sweet.

Given what a liberal weenie Bill Gates is, I am so tempted to make the switch...
