Meryl Streep is in talks to reteam with her "Mamma Mia!" director Phyllida Lloyd for "Thatcher," a biopic of the controversial and long-governing former British prime minister.
Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Margaret Thatcher's husband, Denis, for the pic, which is being produced by Pathe and Film4.
The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2 1/2-month war was a turning point for the prime minister, who, after the victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to win a second term.

Winston Churchhill was a “controversial” figure too. The leftist BBC banned him for saying “rotten” things about Nazi Germany. Things that later were proved to be accurate and deserved.
Just because some people “oppose” someone does not validate their position. There were racists against MLK. I wouldn’t tarnish his legacy by branding him “controversial”.
And just because something is “championed” does not make it “good”. Deep Throat was “controversial” too (and they are making a docudrama about it now) because it was a legal barrier breaking porn film.
Malcom X was “controversial” because even his admirers would have difficulty defending some of his remarks.
Sacrilege.
To her credit however, before she played the title role in 'The Queen' she stated that she was a republican (in the British sense) and all her family were republicans. However, having researched the role in order to play her Maj, she has a lot more sympathy for her and rebuked someone who insulted the Queen within earshot....
I would much rather see Helen Mirren in the role.
Well, that will keep me from watching it. Whatever role Meryl is in, I see Meryl, and not the character she is trying to be. This is not a good choice.
“Controversial” term is used by the MSM to imply that person had employed questionable methods or had views out of mainstream (as they understand it). Therefore, Obama, for example, can never be called controversial.
No. NO! Abso-FREAKIN’-lutely NOT! Are you JOKING!?! I wouldn’t cross the STREET to watch Streep play Maggie! I mean, COME ON! Streep is VERY talented — but she’s SO far left she can’t make a right turn when she drives...If she ever drives herself! It’s an insult to Lady Thatcher!
PLEASE find someone with my bearing, diginity, grit and grace to play the honorable Baroness than Meryl Streep! GOOD heavens!!
I would worry more about the director’s control than the actress’ control.
Besides, if we only went to movies where conservatives performed, we’d never go to movies.
If we only listened to music performed by conservatives, we’d probably only have a few artists to listen to.
All of that being said, I recommend being chosey where you spend your hard earned money on entertainment.
Streep is a highly talented actress.

I would have taken ‘non controversial’ to mean someone who was moderate or middle-of-the-road. Someone who tried to compromise rather than defeat their rivals/enemies. Previous Tory Leaders had tried to reach a consensus (at least within their own party) Thatcher did not, she was a polariser. The term ‘controversial’ fits her any way you put it, and I admire most of what she did....
Every politician tries to defeat his/her enemies. The only question is whom the said politician sees as enemies.
Nonsense, she played Hillary twice - as "Eleanor Shaw" in The Manchurian Candidate, and as "Miranda Priestly" in The Devil Wears Prada.
I'm hoping what happened to Helen Mirren when she played The Queen, happens to Streep and she'll come to learn why Margaret Thatcher is one of the great leaders of the modern age.
If its a hit piece, no one will go and she'll preside over a major flop.
..from Wayons brothers as gay movie critics.
Streep is a leftist of mega proportions. I do not support leftist in any stripe.
I even have a leftist resturaunter in town and I will not darken his door.
Streep is not an excellent actress. She emotes like a stage thespian, overdrawn and self centered.

Me too. I sit there and say: Oh that is Streep emoting! there she is emoting some more. I felt that way at her first film and it carries through til today

That’s right and I hardly ever do.
