Meryl Streep is in talks to reteam with her "Mamma Mia!" director Phyllida Lloyd for "Thatcher," a biopic of the controversial and long-governing former British prime minister.
Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Margaret Thatcher's husband, Denis, for the pic, which is being produced by Pathe and Film4.
The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2 1/2-month war was a turning point for the prime minister, who, after the victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to win a second term.

Floppage.
Helen Mirren would be better (and tougher!)
Subtitle: The Prime Minister Wears Prada
It’ll be interesting to watch Hollywood attempt to discredit and destroy a great lady.
“Controversial???”
“Controversial???”
Meryl Streep: “Thatcher,”
They could make it a silent movie and you would still be able to hear it sucking.
An atrocity that must not be allowed to happen. Stop this in its tracks Deb; you're our only hope.
It will be easy for her. Just redo her acting in the remake of ‘The Manchurian Candidate’.
I’m surprised they didn’t pick Barbara Streisand.
Meryl Streep is a big liberal, but excellent actress. Maybe she’ll get an education from making this film if it’s done fairly.
Not surprising, Charleton Heston was not available.
“the controversial”
Just because the Left hated someone and her alliance with Ronald Reagan does not make that person “controversial”.
Hollywood Reds can shove a sock in it.
They will try to imply that Lady Thatcher went to war only to save her career.
Anyone who provokes controversy and extreme feelings either ‘for’ them or ‘against’ them is controversial. Whether you agree with her politics or not, Thatcher was certainly a polarising figure. Read up on the Miner’s strike of 1984-85 and the Poll Tax Riots of 1990. She was undeniably controversial...
Why barf? Streep is a superb actress. Give her a good script, and none would do better. But will the script be good?
The Left would say that Ronald Reagan was “controversial” as well.
Yet no one dares call Obama “controversial” and if the subject does come up, we are told it’s because of his skin color and not his antiAmerican upbringing that he boasted of in his books when he says he specifically sought out Marxist professors et al to bitch about this country.
Do you honestly think Meryl Streep would attach herself to a movie that was going to be fair and even-handed to one of the 20th century's greatest conservative icons? Come on.
Meryl Streep hates conservatives with the burning passion of a white-hot sun. It doesn't take a Hollywood insider to understand that this will be a hit-piece.
