New PC: WinXP or Win 7?
FreeRepublic ^ | 6/30/2010 | Oshkalaboomboom

My old computer died the other day and I'm picking up a new one tomorrow. I always load the OS myself and for the last few times I've stayed with XP Pro SP3 because it's stable and reliable for what I use the pc for. I've heard decent things about Windows 7 but for now I'm thinking of staying with XP. If you had the chance to reload your pc today would you stick with XP or move to Win 7, and why? No flavors of Unix are an option, I'm sure it's a great OS but I want Windows for this one so just opinions on those 2 please.

Windows 7. You can pay for the high-end version that has a WinXP virtual machine, or you can download VirtualBox for free, create virtual machines and load XP, Mac, whatever you want on there.

Says a spinner who craps all over every mac thread with his windows fanboi delusions. Pot - meet kettle, you’re black.

‘Says a spinner who craps all over every mac thread’

Pointing out that ‘arbitrary code execution’ means the hacker can do anything they want, is not ‘crapping all over every mac thread’.

"...XP on my laptop to run my old scanner."

All this talk about how friendly 7 always seems to ends up with buying new 7-compatable equipment and software.   I may be looking at some kind of multi boot system for my next desktop...

Not a bad idea, although 90% of the software had little or no problems. My faithful HP940 printer, not supported by HP anymore, was addressed and updated recently by MS.

Just my relic Microtek scanner had an issue and some really out of date software I had that I have found work-arounds for.

Forcing an update may sometimes be a good thing.

Read the thread title. Then tell me why are you posting about Mac in a windows thread?

I perosnally thing it’s fine what you did but swordmaker and antirepublicrat SWEAR what you did never happens in windows threads.

us the slurs and insults from Mac users towards Windows users such as you Windows fans have directed towards Mac users in the quantity we experience in Mac/Apple/iPhone threads.

Oh now it's about quantity. I guess this is like that whole evolving Mac security bluff you put out. You know it's impossible to Mac to get any kind of virus even a user installed one. Then it's impossible to get a virus. Then it's Mac has never had a virus in the wild. Then it's Mac doesn't need AV/AM software. Then it's Mac's built in AV/AM softwware really isn't true AV/AM because it only does part of what a robust AV/AM software does.

I'm not going ot play your ever changing game. It has been asked where Mac users post in what is a windows only thread disrupting. I'd say someone asking if they should get XP or Win7 and then having the very first response be get a Mac is completely off topic and disruptive. If the poster wanted to know about Mac they would have asked. It's not like no one knows they exist...they just don't sell very much to warrant serious consideration by most.

This thread was about xp and win7. Not about why the TC can't use Mac and why Mac won't do what he needs, so let's not turn this into a Mac vs. Windows thread as was clearly attempted in the second post of this article. Which the macbots swore never happens.

FWIW - Die hard XP Pro 2 user for years until no longer available on my new laptop.

Had NO choice but Vista 64...Worst OS EVER!

Finally shelled out bucks and got Win7 after BIL (ex-IT for Gerneral Mills) said it was good.

No problems and it is the best OS of any Windows product I have used since original Windows.

Yeah, my social security card is in Roman Numerals.

Only problem I have noticed, and not sure if it is Win7 related or not, Firefox browser shuts down, or says "Not Responding" so I have to shut down Firefox and restart it. Not the computer, just the browser. Especially when I am doing a Google search.

I haven't tried IE but Google Chrome does not do this, just Firefox.

I would use Google Chrome but it has a problem when I try to view a link on a page powered by ASP.NET 2.0 and AJAX 1 Beta2. The drop down menu won't display except in Firefox.

Doubly annoying since it also does not work on my HTC Incredible phone with a Google OS.

The question is where did insults or lies start?

That would take going back years and what would it prove. I'd say the latest round of insults really kicked up with a macbot called puget a GD EVIL LIAR.

That would probably be the worst one. I'm kind of used to being called a troll immediately when posting something that doesn't praise apple, so I won't even consider that much of a name calling issue anymore. But I bet most without the history would consider that the first round.

For example. if Puget posts a thread about iPhone 4 having yellow screen issues. And then I reply with I heard they had antenna issues in the iPhone 4 and the 1st gen iPhone is left unpatched after the latest security patch from Apple.

Then a macbot jumps in and says don't feed the trolls. I'd say most consider that the opening round of name calling. But for me it really took a turn for the worse when Puget was called a GD EVIL LIAR. And I don't recall any of the macbots saying that was out of line or that macbots shouldn't do name calling.

However, I do recall Puget saying just stick to the facts and lets talk about the issues at hand. So if talking about the issues is considered namecalling on an Apple thread I'd say we are all guilty.

A relative blink of an eye the way OS goes.
But still, that’s too soon an end to be committing to using it as an OS.
But within that time, Win7 should have released the service packs, which opens up the possibility of going XP, but then swapping to Se7en after the packs come out.
But then you’re forking out money twice.
*ugh*

You are called a troll because you like to troll on Apple threads. I have said quite a bit against Apple, especially relating to their abusive legal department, over-reaching software licenses and their over-pricing of upgrades. I've gotten into debates with Swordmaker over some of that. I've also been pretty harsh on Apple's previous operating systems. But nobody's called me an anti-Apple troll.

Keeping XP on my laptop to run my old scanner.

Don't feel bad. I once had a printer that would only run off of Windows 95 original version, not even SR2, 98 or anything later. I kept a computer running 95 around for quite a while just because of that.

So I guess name calling is alright when you are the one approving.

It's all in how you do it. Reasonable, even heated debate is fine. Purposely antagonizing, spewing lies, insults and misrepresentations, not quite so much.
