An off-duty crossing guard for Drexel Middle School was arrested last Thursday for allegedly beating a 14-year-old boy who taunted him during the school year.
Gerald Kelly, 60, of the 300-block of Shadeland Avenue in Drexel Hill was arrested June 24 after he assaulted the young teen outside a pharmacy after school hours, police say.
This was a get-even attack, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood told the Delaware County Times. It was certainly inappropriate behavior.
According to Chitwood, the Drexel Hill Middle School student had taunted Kelly with names like fatso and fat man throughout the year.
"But on this day, as far as we know, he wasn't taunting him, Chitwood told the Daily News.
The boy was sitting outside the Shadeland Avenue Pharmacy on Garrett Road when Kelly, a 6-foot 4-inch-tall, 200-pound man with a criminal history of assault, attacked the 14-year-old after the two exchanged words, Chitwood said.
The victim identified Kelly as the crossing guard at his school and says he calls the man fatboy or fatman, Chitwood told the Delaware County Times. The crossing guard started to kick at him and put his foot on his chest then his neck. The kid hit his head on the sidewalk, causing a lump on the back of his head.
At least two people witnessed the assault, Chitwood said.
Kelly was hired by the Upper Darby School District as a crossing guard in October 2009, according to district officials.
Kelly was arrested on charges of simple assault and harassment.
I dont think Id want this guy crossing my kids, Chitwood said. I dont know what the criteria is for hiring crossing guards. We have nothing to do with hiring crossing guards.
“Did the punk call for the Amber Lamps?”

I’m 6’0” and 198 and I’m not at all fat. 6’4” and 200 is pretty lean!
There's a huge difference between protesting someone and acting like a jerk. The kid in question wasn't protesting, he was acting like a jerk. He willingly put himself in a situation where rightfully or wrongly, he got his ass kicked for being a jerk.
Dude,, what you said. lol
My sister (when young and stupid) dated a smart-mouth idiot that just wouldn't learn, even when he would get the sh!t kicked out of him for running his mouth.
There are some people that just need killing.
Ok so whats the problem here? The punk teen learned an important lesson.
Young punk got what he deserved.
The crossing guard made some tactical mistakes.
First of all, no witnesses. Second, ambush attack from behind. Third, cold blooded. Fourth, inflict pain and humiliation, not injury.
In this case, he should have seen him alone, and come up behind him with a stun gun. A nice, 5 second zap and he is face down on the ground. Then use a sharp knife to cut his belt and the back of his pants. Then leave.
This means when he is able to stand up, he will have to hold his pants with one hand to keep them up. A nice touch is to pour some nasty liquid on him, like motor oil.
Im 60 and 198 and Im not at all fat. 64 and 200 is pretty lean!
While I am sympathetic to the plight of the crossing guard I must inform the readers Michael Chitwood was a Philadelphia cop extraordinaire.
Many people celebrate the fictionalized hard ass leo characters popularized by Clint Eastwood.
Michael Chitwood,as I recall, was often compared to Eastwood in the press and sought after by suburban townships after he retired from PPD.
Maybe the kids shouldn't be crossing him...
and this 14 YO has now learned that same lesson
Um, why are they hiring a guy with a criminal history of assault to be a crossing guard?
About a year after high school, he got shot in the face and killed. I never knew the details, other than he was in a bar and the other guy got mad and went out to his car, came back and capped him.
The article says he had a history. The do not say he was convicted, or that the conviction was for a felony.
