Reactively popping the kid in the jaw for mouthing off would be a “provoked response”. This was premeditated assault by stalking the kid to attack him.

Careful with that line of reasoning, there were union goons where were repeatedly hired as “security” at Hillary Clinton events who assaulted FReepers and other protesters (one got gouged in the eyes even).

There's a huge difference between protesting someone and acting like a jerk. The kid in question wasn't protesting, he was acting like a jerk. He willingly put himself in a situation where rightfully or wrongly, he got his ass kicked for being a jerk.

Yup, several times it was thoughts of my grandkids that kept someone else (who had crossed the line) alive.

The crossing guard made some tactical mistakes.

First of all, no witnesses. Second, ambush attack from behind. Third, cold blooded. Fourth, inflict pain and humiliation, not injury.

In this case, he should have seen him alone, and come up behind him with a stun gun. A nice, 5 second zap and he is face down on the ground. Then use a sharp knife to cut his belt and the back of his pants. Then leave.

This means when he is able to stand up, he will have to hold his pants with one hand to keep them up. A nice touch is to pour some nasty liquid on him, like motor oil.

At 60, one must consider that weight distribution varies considerably between men of the same height and weight.
6/4 and 200 lbs could mean a 150 lb stomach and 50 lbs for the other body parts or a perfectly built adonis.

While I am sympathetic to the plight of the crossing guard I must inform the readers Michael Chitwood was a Philadelphia cop extraordinaire.

Many people celebrate the fictionalized hard ass leo characters popularized by Clint Eastwood.

Michael Chitwood,as I recall, was often compared to Eastwood in the press and sought after by suburban townships after he retired from PPD.

"Fat Boy" Tommy (a.k.a "Four Eyes") was a high school classmate of mine. Very smart, likable kid that didn't know how to handle the taunts of Andrew "The Tough". At our 20 year school reunion "Fat Boy", now called "Mr." by his employees told me that Andrew applied for a janitor job at his business unaware of who owned it. Tommy, who is still fat, asked Andrew if he noticed how much weight Tommy had lost (an obvious tease).

True to the kind of guy he is, Tommy gave him the job.

True. I knew a guy when I was in high school. Class clown, funny as all get out. Had a big mouth, though, and used to really know how to throw those barbs that would get under your skin.

About a year after high school, he got shot in the face and killed. I never knew the details, other than he was in a bar and the other guy got mad and went out to his car, came back and capped him.

The article says he had a history. The do not say he was convicted, or that the conviction was for a felony.
