Happy 80th birthday, Thomas Sowell!

Posted on 06/30/2010 6:36:56 AM PDT by Our man in washington

Thomas Sowell, one of the greats of conservative thought, turns 80 today. Sowell's books and columns were the biggest factor in changing me from a liberal to a conservative. I suspect other freepers have been influenced by him as well.

Thanks for everyone extending their good wishes. Here are my favorite Sowell books, in order:

1. the Vision of the Annointed—This book cuts to the heart of the problem with modern liberalism. It discusses how liberals ignore evidence and manipulate fact for the purposes of furthering a self-congratulatory agenda.

2. Knowledge and Decisions—Sowell explains how the fact that knowledge is not free influences how the world works.

3. Intellectuals and Society—Sowell explains why we should not listen to most of those who get proclaimed as being “great intellectuals.”

4. Black Rednecks and White Liberals—A series of essays on subjects from the origins of black culture to the role of German-Americans around the world.

5. Inside American Education—An expose of awful but all-too-common practices in American education.

Any of his other books are worth reading as well.

Thanks for the good wishes. A bump that we may get a few more good wishes and thereby send the link to Dr. Sowell. For what he’s done for the conservative movement, it seems like a nice gesture.

I love it when Dr. Sowell sits in for Rush. Dr. Walter Williams, too. A person can pick up more knowledge about economics in 3 hours of listening to either of them than in 4 years at a typical college or university these days. A while back Dr. Williams sat in for Rush and had Dr. Sowell on as a guest for an hour. I stopped what I was doing and gave my full attention to the discussion. It was very enlightening. I would love to meet both, shake their hands and thank them personally for the knowledge they have imparted in me and for “pushing back the frontiers of ignorance”. Both are true American treasures.

Had a great young conservative engineer working with me get transfered out to California to join a project I was involved in. As he had grown up in Detroit in the urban core he had rejected leftist Democrat philosphy and became a conservative.

I had the distinct pleasure of introducing him to Dr. Sowell’s books and columns with hopes that he could drive the few hours over to the Hoover Institute and hear the good Doctor in person. Prior to my introduction, this young man had known of few conservatives that shared his ethnic heritage and was stunned to learn that Sowell was only one of a long list of conservative thinkers that shared this with him.

Until I read Vision of the Anointed, I could not understand how liberals thought. Now, I can predict them. Sowell is one of the great minds of our time. I am presently reading Intellectuals and Society.
