Energy equations must be computed separately since velocity is an absolute (i.e. a 1 kg object traveling at 100 m/s twice the combined energy of two 1 kg objects travelling at 50 m/s). Use kJ instead of ergs (1E-10 kJ/erg).

I overstated the case a bit saying I “likely” saved a lot of lives warning people busy texting while crossing the street here in Manhattan. But there were indeed many close calls, a few in which it would have been at least very difficult for the driver to have stopped in time.
