Leaked Docs Show Apple Knows About iPhone 4’s Flaws [REPORT]
Mashable.com ^ | 29 Jun 2010 | Jolie O'Dell

Posted on 06/29/2010 8:07:03 PM PDT by for-q-clinton

According to documents leaked to Boy Genius Report today, AppleCare representatives are being given a strong company line to deliver to unhappy iPhone 4 owners who complain about reception issues.

Employees are told to say that the device’s reception performance “is the best we have ever shipped” and that its critical antenna flaws are “a fact of life in the wireless world.” They are told not to perform service on iPhones with these problems and instead to give customers a PR-driven recitative instead.

In a nutshell, Apple knows the phone has problems but will insist that users are simply “holding it wrong.”

These statements are dead ringers for CEO Steve Jobs’ own assertions that the iPhone 4 antenna and reception issues do not, in fact, exist. “There is no reception issue,” he told one user. But the very fact that this document exists suggests that Apple execs know there is indeed a widespread hardware flaw, even if they’re unwilling to address it publicly at this time.

Outside the reality distortion field, on the other hand, we and many others have been able to duplicate the issue being discussed: When held by its sides, which are composed of a metal antenna band, the phone’s reception quality drops dramatically. iPhone owners in our newsroom have seen reception decrease from five to two bars simply from holding the phone with two points of contact between the owner’s hand and the antenna band.

One law firm is even preparing for a class-action lawsuit against Apple and is soliciting iPhone 4 customers to contact them about reception issues.

Also, while some folks have reported that using a bumper case prevents contact with the antenna band and preserves reception quality, AppleCare reps are being told to not give bumper cases to disgruntled users.

That post was in response to a claim that the iPhone announcement for Verizon was responsible for an increase in Verizons stock price.

I was pointing out that AT&T has have the iPhone for quite sometime and their stock price has not gone up.

But taking things out of context is your specialty so please don’t let reality step in.

And I was putting YOUR negative comment back into context. Your relating AT&T's stock prices to two anchor points of July 2007 and today, ignoring all of what has gone on inbetween, has NOTHING to do with Verizon's stock uptick on good news that they will be getting the iPhone in January in 2011. Your comments was a non sequitur... it simply did not follow. It was a gratuitous jab at Apple and the iPhone for no good reason or logic... except that it was snarky.

“And I was putting YOUR negative comment back into context. “

What negative comment was that? I pointed out the historical stock price of AT&T after the poster claimed the lack of growth was due to short term effects.

Three years of falling stock price is not short term.
Again, you make false charges that do not stand the test of scrutiny.

turnaround is fair play

My point exactly. For years Microsoft users were beaten up by apple fans. So as you say turn around is fair play.

I heard part of what Rush said about the FCC being partly responsible for the issue, but it wasn't because they required the antennas to be outside the case. Rush was saying a new reg requires cell phone antennas must be placed as far from the user's brain as possible, which is why many phone makers are now placing their transmitting antennas at the base, down where the thickest part of the palm is located when you hold it normally. The antenna can still be inside.

And that is also incorrect; the FCC sets absorption limits for the body (SAR) which means you have measure the RF output at distance and orientation from a body. The FCC by no means dictates a specific location or distance from the brain. There are other phones recently released - the HTC EVO, for example - that have internal antennas right at the top of the phone.

The fact other phones - tested and released about the same time as the iPhone - have different antenna configurations shows that it's not an FCC regulation about what you have to do; it shows that Apple tried something new, and they got bit by it.

Sword,
When I read your first post in response to Drift’s ATT stock price comment...i was thinking Drift went over the deep end with his response and you were dead on with your remarks.

However, Drift has completely explained it and it makes total sense now.

He was refuting someone else’s stupid comment that the iPhone drove up Verizon’s stock price. If iPhone was guaranteed to drive up stock price ATT would not be lower today. The point is one can’t draw any conclusions based on one data factor.

The point is that you cannot make stock conclusion based on what driftdiver is doing... taking an anchor point and ignoring everything that went on inbetween and using just one factor. Yes, the jump in Verizon's stock today probably had a lot to do with the announcement that Verizon will be getting the iPhone in January... and yes, it is probably totally irrational. How will getting the iPhone in January affect the profitability of Verizon today? If anything it might depress it as people withhold buying Androids... waiting six months to upgrade instead of upgrading today. Often Apple stock DROPS on good news.

Hell must be freezing over... you and I agree. :^)>

A retort to a specific statement vs. constantly coming on Apple threads and insulting the platform and its users. The equivalence isn't there.

You do realize that for-q-clinton actually started this thread? You're coming into his thread and being argumentative, rather than what you're claiming...

And that's true for most of the recent contentious threads. They were started not by Mac/Apple people, nor created as MacList threads, but by others, and then degraded after the Apple faithful showed up.

I think you are taking his point too literally...he was pointing out the absurd with the absurd.

Person A says iPhone made verizon stock go up.
Person B says then why did iPHone make ATT stock go down?

Person B is using Person A’s broken logic to prove Person A’s point is invalid.

But only the Mac faithful are allowed to post in Mac threads...didn't you get the memo? And that includes threads not started by the mac faithful as well.

The FCC by no means dictates a specific location or distance from the brain.

Oh come on, you know that's complete bull government weasel speak. If you want decent signal strength, you have to move it away from the brain due to the FCC regs, and on a modern brick phone that means to the bottom. Alternately, you have to provide shielding, which adds weight and size to a phone in a market that values light weight and small size. Or you could just suck up having a lower transmit signal strength. Basic physics, inverse square law.

There are other phones recently released - the HTC EVO, for example - that have internal antennas right at the top of the phone.

The EVO has several antennas in the inner back shell, all around the phone.

it shows that Apple tried something new, and they got bit by it.

Wow, he actually admits Apple tries to innovate.

Often Apple stock DROPS on good news.

Do you even know what this is? Based on your post it appears you're a bit naive about how stock prices work. Let's forget about Obama and his crapping all over the economy for a minute. Often times good news results in stocks dropping? Here's why. It's not good news as told by the company but what the street expected.

Microsoft (in their hayday) would always beat their stated forecast. But drop because the STREET expected more. So if they said we will make $1per share and then end up making $1.05 you'd think wow they did better than they said they would. But the street knew MS always beats what they say so they were expecing $1.10 per share.

Stock drops on goods news.

For-q-clinton, I've posted this several times before. My degree is in FINANCE. So yes, I know exactly how this works. Apple has recently blown away Street expectation on every quarter results and the stock price has dropped on several announcements. The response is irrational. Your response is a form of ad hominem, again. Sigh.

Oh come on, you know that's complete bull government weasel speak. If you want decent signal strength, you have to move it away from the brain due to the FCC regs, and on a modern brick phone that means to the bottom.

Apparently you've never heard of this magical thing called "shielding" whereby you can "shield" radiation in a given direction. I know, it's new, it's only been around for 140+ years..

The EVO has several antennas in the inner back shell, all around the phone.

Yes, and it actually passes FCC SAR requirements! The antenna is near the top of the phone, something you've intimated could not work (government weasel speak and all). And it does not have external antennas where a person would hold them. I guess HTC doesn't know anything, and it MUST be some Government conspiracy to force Apple to put the antennas is the wrong spot.

Wow, he actually admits Apple tries to innovate.

I've never denied it; of course, they did a terrible job at it, and any EE with any knowledge at all would have said what they're doing is completely wrong, but that's OK. Apple tried something new (as ignorant as it may be) and learned what everyone else knew from the get-go: having the user touch the antenna is a BAD THING. And putting the antenna where the user will often touch the antenna in normal operation is even worse.

But it just means people are holding the phone wrong; after all, that's what Apple's line is now. Either that or it's the dreaded FCC mandating things like antenna placement (although that doesn't seem to impact anyone else). It's never Apple's fault for blowing it on this attempt. Must be a conspiracy of the government and the "mac haters", right?

Just curious if you'll ever admit they actually screwed up on this design, that this was a bad idea from the start. I assume not, but maybe you'll prove me wrong...

Even worse, creating a thread for the purpose of bashing Apple products and its users.

And that's true for most of the recent contentious threads. They were started not by Mac/Apple people, nor created as MacList threads, but by others, and then degraded after the Apple faithful showed up.

This thread. Started by non-Apple, iPhone called a "dud" in first post. Then a complaint about Apple infatuation and worship, a well-mannered reply from a user, then it starts to go downhill with the Apple haters such as you again.

Purported Microsoft Documents Outline Windows 8. Posted by a Linux guy. As noted, a non-divisive mention of PC and Mac, then immediately a downright insulting post inlcuding "Their O/Ss are designed for idiots or liberals because it basically nannies you..."

iOS 4 vs Android 2.2 - Fight: The two leading operating systems go toe to toe . Posted by you, immediately comparing iPhones to Democrats.

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 can read your iPhone's secrets. You post again (I notice it's only negative stories). First real insult post 56, for-q, telling someone to come out of the "Apple closet" (implying he's gay) and went downhill from there.
