Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate. Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass.

I don't know about that. Matthew Brady about went bankrupt with his effort to send out photo crews to document the civil war from both sides. He owned a photo studio and I don't think that he would forgo any ability to recoup his expenses just for the glass.
