Opinions on Aspartame

Posted on 06/27/2010 5:00:24 PM PDT by Vision

I'm curious to what Freepers think of Aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in diet products like diet coke.

Many websites, albeit possibly kooky websites, say Aspartame produces side effects like anxiety, blurred vision, depression, etc. The medical establishment and Feds say its heavily tested and safe.

Anyone with an opinion or experience?

You missed the one that will have the scariest effect on Americans: Phosphoric acid.

The dissolving effects of phosphoric acid are urban legend, or not really all that impressive when you examine the claims, but...

Bone is made of calcium phosphate. Your body infers how much calcium it has available why measuring the levels of phosphate in its system. Plenty of phosphate must mean plenty of calcium. But if you ingest phosphate without calcium, you can fool your body into thinking it has plenty of calcium, so you pee away all you calcium reserves, resulting in osteoporosis.

Phosphate is not in all sodas; it *is* however in the most popular ones, in massive quantities, such as cola. It’s also what gives a certain iced tea the “bite” that it advertises.

Hawaiian Punch also has tons or artificial colors, petroleum derivatives. That’s what gets me. And my boy has horrible reactions to artificial food dyes. He gets very, very mean and psychotic.

For all you nonbelievers, we’ve done tests with him. It’s within 15 minutes. And ibuprofen mitigates the effect. Anti inflammatory response I guess....

I believe it. I used to love chewing bubble gum. Then they started using aspartame. I had to stop as the headaches were horrible.

And I’ll be paying for your fat ass when you develop osteoporosis from failing to to take care of your own health, educating yourself about what you put in your body and consuming crap...all because you know uncle Obama will take care of you at the expense of others.

First. You don't have the slightest idea how big my ass is, how I eat, how much I exercise, or how I take care of myself in general. To assume you do, based on a stated soft drink preference, doesn't speak well of your reasoning skills. Making a future medical diagnosis of osteoporosis for someone you don't know, based on something you must have read somewhere about soda, makes you look way beyond ridiculous. By the way: You don't eat meat or cheese or anything cooked on a fire do you? I read something once somewhere about things like that. You're gonna get sick and cost me money dammit.

Second. Isn't Obama and Obamacare all about people, that think they know a whole lot more than they do, indulging their totalitarian impulses trying to tell free people how to live the smallest details of their lives under the guise that what people do when left alone is unacceptable and costly? I don't understand why you would have a problem with that, given your obvious and stated tendency to engage in the same practice.

DISCUSSION: Excitotoxins are molecules, such as MSG and aspartate, that act as excitatory neurotransmitters, and can lead to neurotoxicity when used in excess. CONCLUSIONS: The elimination of MSG and other excitotoxins from the diets of patients with fibromyalgia offers a benign treatment option that has the potential for dramatic results in a subset of patients.

My daughter was about 7 or 8 and loved chewing gum so my husband bought her sugarless. The sugarless was aspartame. She was constantly complaining about stomach-aches but she had been a colicky baby so we didn’t think much of it. One morning she was crying a lot so I took her to the ER and she was admitted. After three days in the hospital nothing could be found to be causing the pain and so she was released.

A month later I read a column in the newspaper that aspartame was responsible for causing gas and stomach-aches. She hasn’t chewed sugarless gum in over 15 years and her stomach-aches are gone.

My daughter was diagnosed with a seizure disorder several years ago.

Aspartame (all artificial sweetners) are items that she cannot eat because they can lower her seizure threshold.

Since I found that out, I figure the stuff is probably not good for normal people.

(However, I know it is good for diabetics.)

I have diabetes. Asparatame is ihe only sweetner that tastes good to me. I have tried the others, but they don’t do anything for my tastebuds. However, to each his own.

Aspartame chemically converts to formaldehyde in the body.

Does that sound like a good thing...health wise?
