Wait On Line To Show Your Costco Receipt Or You Will Be Assaulted
The Consumerist ^ | June 26, 2010 | Carey Alexander

Let's say you're in a rush after buying a fan at Costco. You look past the line packed with people and carts and spy a lone employee standing by the exit. Do you walk over and show your receipt? What's the worst that could happen? Let's ask Reader Shay.

“ On June 23, 2010 at the [redacted] Costco Center at around 11am I made a quick stop in to return a couple items and to pick a fan. Both the returns process and the checkout went wonderfully as usual. It only took me 2 minutes to get in line and pay for the one item I had.

However when I reached the exit door there was a line of 8 people with baskets of stuff waiting to get out the door. So I went to the other door which does have exit illuminated above it and showed the lady standing there my receipt and one item. She shook her head at me and pointed at the line. When I started to walk out the exit anyways she grabbed a hold of my arm and told me to go to the other line. I told her that I was already running late and the line was moving very slowly, so I continued out the exit. At this point her hand slipped off of my arm and she grabbed a hold of my purse. The first time I politely asked her to let go of me, to which she promptly ignored me. So I continued to walk out the door as she still held onto my purse, eventually grabbing onto it with a second hand and began tugging it. I finally started yelling at her to let go of me when we were in front of the exit area (directly center to both entrances). Even after people started stopping and staring at us, She continued to tug on my purse and would not let go no matter how loud I yelled. She finally let go when I knocked her hands off of my purse with pretty reasonable force.

I was honestly pretty shaken up over this. I really couldn’t believe someone would do this in a public place especially an employee of that store. I sat in my car for about 5 minutes and calmed down. Then I had to find the number for Costco, because no where on my receipt does it list a phone number. I finally got a hold of the stores assistant manger and explained what had happened. He was polite and apologetic and end up meeting me in front of the store so I could point out who had done this to me. He said that he would speak with this Employee and that the Store Manger would call me when he came in.

True to his word the store manger did give me a call a few hours later. He once again apologized for the situation. I explained to what had happened and he confirmed that the statement that the employee had to fill out stated exactly what I had told him.

I have also mailed a letter to the regional manger letting him know exactly what happen as well. This should have never happen to me and I will continue writing to members of Costco Management, to ensure that this doesn’t happen to anyone else. There should be a Zero Tolerance Policy for this type of employee behavior. ”

Any wonder why Amazon.com keeps growing?

Try shopping in a Safeway. They invariably beg for money at checkout for whatever feel-good cause de jure of Safeway's CEO. I hate shopping at Safeway for a number of reasons anyway, but I do like their Safeway Chipolti Salsa, and the quart jars are usually on sale for $2.29, a real bargain.

I always make a minor scene now when they beg me for money at checkout, raising my voice very loudly and intensely protesting being hassled with their begging when all I want to to do is quietly buy a couple jars of salsa in peace, and that's why I hate shopping at Safeway and why I avoid it like the plague. Most people just mumble no or shake their head and feel vaguely guilty from saying no to Safeway's begging. Not me. And I always feel so much better about myself after retaliating. (BTW, I don't direct my tirade against the checkout clerk, but to the store in general.)

You are conjuring up a scene that really doesn’t exist. Costco is a membership warehouse. Members pay annually to belong and they know - or should - how it operates. No one forced the woman to join or to shop there.

At Costco members buy in bulk and pay about half the amount you’d pay in a retail shop. The prices are low for a number of reasons (wholesale buying, putting house brand name on brand-name products, no frills at all ... it is literally a warehouse). Part of the membership agreement is that you might be required to wait an entire minute or two to have your receipt checked against your purchases. It is no big deal. She paid to belong; she’d been there recently or would not have been making a return. She knows the deal, but deemed herself too important to do what everyone else who belongs and shops there does.

Since my family has grown, I no longer belong, but that membership was worth its weight in gold when we were raising kids. In particular, one of our children required an Rx that was $64 for a week’s supply at CVS; Costco charged $13 for the same Rx. Maybe this lady would prefer to exercise the CVS option and not waste that two minutes of her precious time waiting in line at Costco.

“Once I have paid for my purchases I will not wait in line to get out of the store.”

I’m with you. I’m often a cranky ol’ bastard and if they don’t like it, they can terminate my membership as is their right.

Sometimes I’ll let ‘em look - but I never let them touch my stuff - I just tell them that they have to wash his hands first. Works every time.

You spell "manger" incorrectly at least four times. I assume you mean "manager". Also you refer to the employee as "She", capitlaized, as if referring to God. Interesting.

Don't you hate it when trying to critique others on spelling, ya misspell words?

“Actually in Florida this lady could be charged with Resisting a Merchant. I’m not sure how many states have this statute.”

I thought you were joking when I first read this.

It make sense, she is trying to circumvent the loss prevention process.

Why is crazy? It’s part of the reason you get such good prices there. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.

I’m sure the new Federal Dry Goods Mega-Mart will require it, along with a DNA sample and copy of last years tax return. Birth certificate not needed though.

“Perhaps the employee had no way of knowing just how special you were or that your time was more valuable than others.

Well, I never said why that employee decided to grab me. You simply assumed it was under the same circumstances. Congratualtions, you’re an idiot.

“Yes but I’m sure you wouldn’t knowingly violate the membership rules of a buyers club you voluntarily joined “

That’s true. I may be an asshole but I am a civil asshole. That said, anyone trying to grab and move someone had best be performing an arrest least they find that hand missing. I have no problem with someone grabbing me to get my attention about something, but not to try to coerce my movements.

“Were I the store manager I’d have revoked her membership on the spot and refunded her fee to her with a request that she never return.”

The one thing about that is the store has a responsibility to be prudent about their checking procedure. If they are slow and cumbersome then a person has the right to simply leave. The store may ask they not return but a smart person would have already made that decision never to return to such a ridiculous place. I don’t shop Cosco, Sams or any other such places due to the products not being all that great nor the prices so low as to warrant the ridiculous procedures they use.

You might want to read the part where she had paid for her purchase and showed her receipt to a store employee before you post such tripe.

Hey, moron, did I say WHY the incident took place? Did I say that I was in the wrong line when it happened? No, I didn’t. Assuming things not in evidence just proves why this nation is going down hill; morons who think they know everything. Arrogance, pure arrogance.

Hi GG

I was just wondering if the COSTCO receipt checkers go on to become TSA employees or vice versa. ;)

If this woman was manning the second exit, why couldn't she do the exit check procedure, shortening the wait time of everyone, including those in the first line.

That said, I can never understand why these stores have exit checks? After all, the cashier should be responsible for you paying for every item, and deactivating any and all security tags.

“She shook her head at me and pointed at the line”

You might want to read the above sentence.

The employee in question obviously didn’t even look at the receipt, and was immediately rejecting what she was trying to do. Why? Nobody knows, and I surely don’t care, but this is what the employee did.

They have a process—if you’re in too much of a hurry— then wait until you can be held up for 5 minutes.

What is scary is the number of people here that don’t see the physical assault on this woman as the problem, but the fact she ‘cut’ the line greatly disturbs them.

The bleating of the sheep is getting deafening. Receipt checker lines GOOOOOOD! Line cutter BAAAAAAHHHD!
