The Flickr source says that Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy “jokes around” at the G-8 summit in Ontario, Canada, the pre-meeting ahead of the G-20 summit in Toronto this weekend. Doesn’t look like Sarkozy’s laughing, or for that matter that Obama’s telling a joke — although Sarkozy could be saying, “Nah, I’ve heard that before. The punchline is ‘Nanny-state’!” Let’s see what you all think!

Its a prelude to putting both his hands on a man’s shoulders.

Imho, it is an attempt to dominate, and more.

Good points! I’ve seen Obama act as obsequious as a whipped puppy around around Putin and Medvedev. But not even that creeps me as much as the hand on the allies’ shoulders. Yuck.

I would also think it’s a breach of etiquette. Is it really classy for one male president to paw another? It just doesn’t come off looking respectful. If, as you say, it’s an attempt to dominate, then I guess respect is a moot point.

“If, as you say, it’s an attempt to dominate, then I guess respect is a moot point.”

I recall some T.V show, or perhaps it was internet on how the presidents get trained on this. Many of the examples were from President G.W. Bush. Things such as letting the other dignatary go first, but then it is an opportunity to put your hand on their shoulder (dominance). I think another was to sit on stage right so when you shake hands, your hand is on top when viewed by the camera.

Silly stuff - it’s too bad so much of it is image. Although Obama, when he points his finger at someone is REALLY a sign of disrespect.

I always step away when someone invades my personal space like that. I also sort of sidestep hand-on-the-shoulder intimidation, especially as a female and if a male gets too familiar. B.O. is so used to using this tactic in the ‘hood and thinks it works at this high level. In this picture, he comes across as a skinny, wannabe punk. He’s probably saying, with that lisping, whistling voice of his, “No, wait. Wait.”

I agree: the finger pointing is very rude.
