Atheist ad goes up on Billy Graham Parkway

CHARLOTTE, N.C., - An atheists organization says it rented a billboard on a Charlotte, N.C., street named after the most famous U.S. evangelist strictly for economic reasons.

The Charlotte Atheists & Agnostics ad appeared over Billy Graham Parkway Monday and will be up for four weeks, The Charlotte Observer said. William Warren, a spokesman for the group, said the location was chosen because two other possibilities near the interstate were too expensive and a third billboard would have been seen by fewer people in the heart of the Bible Belt.

"We got more bang for our buck there," Warren said of the parkway.

The billboard and others going up around the state are part of a July 4 campaign by the N.C. Secular Association. The ad shows an American flag and quotes the Pledge of Allegiance as it was originally written before the words "under God" were added in 1954.

"We're doing this to raise the consciousness of the people of North Carolina," said Warren, an electronics technician who spent five years in the U.S. Marine Corps. "We want to let them know that not everybody here is religious. There are atheists in North Carolina, and we expect to be recognized and treated like everybody else."

A coalition of humanist and nontheist groups has brought what they call a "patriotic message" to North Carolinians: "One Nation Indivisible

Athiest message fail. Looks very patriotic to me. One really has to give it some thought to see their message.

Put up pro-Christian billboards on the Coasts.

This billboard needs to go down! They aren’t patriots. They would eliminate the blessings the G-d has given this country.

ok... sounds good. they are doing it to raise awareness. check. just so we understand the rules of the game.

then it should be perfectly fine to erect billboards every mile with different Christian sayings, pictures, or themes... like pro-family, anti-abortion, pro-morals messages

(**gasp** shocking! how dare i suggest such a thing!!)

There are people in this world, who for no other reason than their own pride, feel it is their place to try to piss others off.

Like was said before, let them waste their time and money.

This is so sad. The message is bad enough, but putting it on the Billy Graham Parkway is just plain evil. It’s an insult to “God’s Ambassador”, who has spent a life time bringing people to Christ. Now that he is old and infirm, they do this. Disgraceful. Couldn’t they put a cover over it like they did the Mojave Cross?

Fundamental atheists are intolerant of anybody who doesn’t believe in their cult.

Pray for America

The secular association is calling "secular humanism" a religion if they are going to come out as atheist supremacists.

Atheism and State is as verbotten as establishing any OTHER official religion.

They are seeking to divide.

I don't think they understand what "Indivisible" means. They should go to Saudi Arabia if they think they are living in a theocracy.

True. We have a president that doesn’t know how many states there are. How will this generation recognize missing words when they’ve probably never said the pledge in their lives.

They are free to be atheists. They seek freedom from religious expression. That is intolerance.

This nation was founded on escaping religious persecution.

May not have been the only issue, but the founders understood what had happened throughout history. And they recongized that some things like your religious views (including to believe there is no god) are beyond the scope of man’s laws. You have an inalienable right, one they noted was God given.

Some don’t want to accept a higher power. But they don’t even want to hear that others were inspired by their own belief in a higher power, something greater than man.

And that’s it. No codification as to “what” nature that higher power takes or how to worship to he/she/it.

It's rude and unconscionable, but since when have liberals or atheists not been rude and unconsionable?

It's called "Freedom of Speech" and it is protected under the First Amendment. Our rights have always been a double edged sword, if they protect your right to praise God, then they also protect their right to denounce him.

I'm more accepting of this billboard than Dr. Pepper's bogus excuse that there just wasn't the room for the words "Under God" on a soda can. Ever see the font size used for the ingredients?

"..." INDEED.

If you believe in our Constitution, then this billboard needs to remain exactly where it is.
