Modernizing nations like Malaysia can still be cute and coy and support the headchoppers in Afghanistan while building huge skyscrapers...but they have to know that ultimately the two things are mutually exclusive.

The true face of Islamism is Mohamed Atta’s grad school thesis, where he seethed in anger at the sight of the tall buildings in Damascus looming over the ancient souks, which are basically unchanged since the time of the Prophet, which is just the way the Islamists like it.

At some point, if a Taliban-style government comes to power in Kuala Lumpur, they will be taking a long, long look at the Petronas Tower. With hatred of everything it represents. All the trappings of modernism which are giving the Malays their upward mobility, will disappear.
