I have a model 74s, semi-auto .22 long rifle caliber that I purchased from my mother when she was still alive. It was made in the 1960s, and is still incredible accurate for a .22. Has anyone ever mounted a scope on this rifle? It has a redfield(once a popular brand)peep sight at the time but I would love to mount a scope on it.

Any help would be appreciated. This is a very accurate and reliable rifle, well made as Winchesters of the past were.

They are not redfield olypic sights but regular Redfield sights. The insert is missing because the gunsmith who did the work said that the sight was more useful with out it. It is a good sight but my eyes are old:) Thanks for the input, BTW, I just looked at the sights again and they are Williams peeps, not Redfield. Sorry about the mistake. Many of our guns had Redfield sights back in the day and I assumed. You know what they say about assuming!

Could you please change the words Redfield in the comment to Williams? Thanks in advance.

Ok, The camera I have uses 3.5 inch floppys, the computer I have doesn’t have a floppy drive, other wise I would have many pictures of the fire arm. I know how frustrating it can be to have an article like this without pictures!

Thanks for the picture.
I had a Winchester 1973 in 32/20 in the fifties.

You need a pair of Weaver #12 bases and a gunsmith who can drill and tap four holes without screwing it up. This will probably cost you $15.00 for the bases and $50.00 for the work. A $50.00 Simmons scope is more than enough for your application. Don’t buy a BSA - they’re garbage.

The rings that come on the Simmons 22 Mag scope are for a 22 dovetail and won’t work with the Weaver bases. You’ll need a pair of Weaver style rings for $25.00. Make sure you have the scope and rings so the gunsmith can position it properly before he drills the holes.

Thanks for the info, I already have a scope and rings, I do need to get the bases though. I really hate to put a scope on it but when you get to be 68 it is hard to shoot any type of open sights. I like Simmons optics, for the money they are great.
