According to the WSJ, the rights watchdog declared that "whether or not (Kilmer) had actually talked trash about his county, he had every right to do so without fear that his permits would be held hostage."

I gotta agree with the ACLU here, but so what, torment him anyway.

“...he understands Vietnam better than its veterans, because most of them were “borderline criminal or poor ... wretched kids” who landed in the military because they “got beat up by their dads” or “couldn’t finagle a scholarship.”

This is your brain on KoolAid!

Someday Val ought to pick up a book on the subject of Viet Nam.... even one book would be nice because it is obvious that he never actually introduced himself to the facts.

But … before you shoot off your mouth. about ANYTHING on earth, it is a good idea to do some homework! Only Hollywood creeps don’t seem to comprehend this.

...he says-describing his rugged corner of New Mexico as “the homicide capital of the Southwest.”

Geez, who would want to spend a weekend in the homicide capital of the Southwest? This Kilmer dude is one smart businessman.

He’s a libtard,to be sure.

However, forcing a man to say or “unsay” anything in order to get a permit is, frankly, a little scary.

he had every right to do so without fear that his permits would be held hostage

What right? He has the right to say whatever he wants. He also has to take his consequences of what he says. His comments hurt the image of his county. The elected officials of his county have the right to protect the business interests of the county. By denying his a zoning approval, the business interests of the county might be helped.

Why is it ‘surprising’ the ACLU is backing an America bashing liberal? Have they, or would they, backed/back a far right radical in similar circumstances? Now that would be ‘surprising’.

2007 statistics show that AZ had a murder rate of 7.4 per 100K, Utah 2.2, Nevada 7.5, New Mexico 8.2, Colorado 3.1, and California 6.2.

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2010/tables/10s0297.pdf

He is correct on at least one of his statements. But why does NM have such a rate even compared to CA?

Big-mouth Hollywood actor Val Kilmer is finding that out in New Mexico, where a number of residents are upset over incendiary remarks the Hollywood pretty boy has made over the years about veterans and rural life in northern New Mexico.

WTFIIW... actually,I'm with the New Mexicans on this one.

He went on to avow that "80% of the people in my county are drunk," requiring him to carry a gun for protection.

That is true in our County also, and well over half of that crowd are hispanic immigrants (illegal or otherwise), confirmed by private talk with the local LEO's.

The ACLU is also correct in this case. What Mr. Kilmer has opinionated here has nothing to do with his property rights or appeal. It is called free speech. That is to say it is the judge (Lopez) who is the incipient bigot here.

For those who have not been to New Mexico or Arizona lately, these are the trashiest States in the union. Go out to the four corners area, the Navajo Reservation; in the middle of extensive plano there is trash as far as the eye can see. This apparently is the values of those inhabiting the region.

Repeat, the vast stretches of reservation in Arizona and New Mexico are trashed far beyond civility, and respect for American soil.

I do not personally know Val Kilmer but with respect to the land I would say exactly what he has said. Vietnam, a different story, for I have friends, college graduates, killed and maimed in such.

The point is, one must face the facts, beyond the bigotry of personal attachment or dislike. Barack Obama, advancing a bigoted political agenda, being the perfect example: he can say all he wants, but he should never have been a President (and was made so by sinister underlying forces).

Now surprisingly, Kilmer is getting support from the local ACLU. According to the WSJ, the rights watchdog declared that "whether or not (Kilmer) had actually talked trash about his county, he had every right to do so without fear that his permits would be held hostage."

As much as I hate to admit it, he does have the right to say what he wants. You can't selectively apply the 1st amendment, even though the ACLU and other lefties do it with conservatives all the time.

It is getting a little scary to think that for someone to get the requisite permits to improve their property they must be subject to a litmus test to see whether they have the correct thoughts and actions.

To be put through a wringer and made to voice or print apologies to get permits is beyond the pale.
