does it allow for upgrades? what 3rd party hardware is supported? can i install my own OS on it?

Looks like a nifty redesign, and the unit is tailor-made as a media server, especially with the HDMI port.

To me, the big question is how easy would this be to use to record video from the entertainment system, rather than just being used as a playback device.
