I Admit It: I Was Wrong To Have Supported Barack Obama
Daniel Hannan June 14th, 2010
Theres little point, I know, in reminding readers that my support for Barack Obama was qualified; that I simultaneously endorsed GOP Congressional candidates; that I never saw Obama as a messiah and, indeed, was repelled by the millenarian fervour of his supporters. Nor is there much purpose in rehearsing John McCains shortcomings. The fact remains that I backed the Democrat.
I was wrong. Not that Obama is without his good points, obviously. His commitment to school choice is unfeigned. His foreign policy has been a jolly sight cheaper than McCains would have been. The election of a mixed-race president who opposed the Iraq war has made the USA slightly more popular.
None of these advantages, however, can make up for the single most important fact of Obamas presidency, namely that the federal government is 30 per cent larger than it was two years ago
This is not entirely Obamas fault, of course. The credit crunch occurred during the dying days of the Bush administration, and it was the 43rd president who began the baleful policy of bail-outs and pork-barrel stimulus packages. But it was Obama who massively extended that policy against united Republican opposition. It was he who chose, in defiance of public opinion, to establish a state-run healthcare system. It was he who presumed to tell private sector employees what they could earn, he who adopted the asinine cap-and-trade rules, and he who re-federalised social security, thereby reversing the single most beneficial reform of the Clinton years.
These errors are not random. They amount to a comprehensive strategy of Europeanisation: Euro-carbon taxes, Euro-disarmament, Euro-healthcare, Euro-welfare, Euro-spending levels, Euro-tax levels and, inevitably, Euro-unemployment levels.

This guy, he’s an expert at being stupid? The USA is more popular because we have a multi cultural president? How pathetic.....
Daniel, you’re a good guy, but you have to listen to us. This guy was crap from the get-go, and it wasn’t that hard to see.
The GOP gave us Obama..nobody else.
Isn’t this guy a Brit?
The infamous “Devalued Prime Minister of a Devalued Government” youtube sensation ‘round these parts

Full conversion will happen when he stops using words like “jolly sight”.
He’s British. They talk funny.
:D
BO’s commitment to school choice put a cap on the program in DC. Yeah that sounds like his level of “commitment” like in keeping your medical care if you like it. He’s quite adept at talking out both sides of his mouth.
Here is the best suggestion of the day. Please don't tell me that the Brits would be betraying the American troops - they have to support National interests first - yes?
Yup, you were "just following orders".
Too effing bad.
Guilty.
Take him away to await sentencing.

Yeah? Name me ONE accomplishment of Obama either as a state or US Senator, Danny.
Qualified my arse.
He's saying that his support was qualified (hedged, not wholehearted), not that Obama was.
I know what he meant.
How does one qualify ones support? Wouldn't you base that on what the person actually looking for support has done?
Otherwise, what does his support was qualified, infer?
Bless you my son.....now, wasn’t so hard to admit it was it
This is what happens when you support someone because of charisma and talk.
Obozo had a thin and nonexistent resume. He also had a very pathetic and lackluster Illinois senate record and US Senate record.
All of his records have been off limits to boot. His books were disgusting and probably penned by Bill Ayers.
There was no good reason for a smart man to support this freak.
His commitment to school choice is unfeigned.
...then I stopped reading.
I think his regrets will be compounded by hundreds of Democrats here in the U.S. Their support of Obama will destroy all. of their careers come November. Is Pelosi really ultra safe in her seat? They said the same about Mass and NJ. Republicans had no chance yet they did win.
One can't. This is the kind of tepid thing someone says when they make an endorsement they know there is a realistic chance of being slapped around for. One can either appear brilliant or stupid, and when the coin is facing "Stupid" as it spins down, it's CYA.
A "qualified" CYA.
I hope the writer feels the same way, and expresses that feeling, when Obama runs for re-election!
He didn't author any legislation and would could use 100 more like that in the US Senate today.
