"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

Evening, Vision.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

!June 13, 2010 (WARNING: Contains Spoilers)
- 07:00 p.m. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar
8/4/57 "The Wayward Widow Matter" Matter #548 (29:37) Bob Bailey, Virginia Gregg (Betty Charlene Winters), Harry Bartell (Harry Branson), Eric Snowden (Eric), Frank Gerstle (Haskins) ; Writer/Producer/Director- Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Joe Walters ; Expense Account Total = $365.50 ; The story of a tragedy that befell a sweet old widow, and the very surprising results when she tried to move from her Ardmore-Bryn Mawr area home along with her ugly four foot statue of a cherub. Harry Branson, Philadelphia Mutual Liability and Casualty, Walnut Street, Philadelphia, calls Johnny about a job. He is to accompany wealthy recent widow Betty Charlene Winters, 70 years old, and a statue on her summer trip to Lake Walayonda in northern New Jersey, northeast of the town of Andover. They go to the Winters estate and are ushered in by Eric, who has been the butler there for 30 years. They meet Mrs. Winters and the chauffeur, Haskins. Haskins will soon be leaving on his vacation. Dollar is to drive Mrs. Winters 1928 Pierce-Arrow to the Lake. Haskins easily loads the box containing the statue into the car. Dollar is going to stay in the mansion over the night before they are to leave for the Lake. Sometime after midnight he slips out of his room and somebody hits him over the head, knocking him out. He wakes up in the morning lying comfortably in his bed, but with a painful knot on the back of his head. Mrs. Winters says that she was a chorus girl who married Winters for his money. The last few years of the marriage had been very unsatisfactory because her husband didn't want to travel. The only other person in the house is the old cook, Martha. Eric admits that he had carried Dollar back to bed, thinking that Johnny had passed out from too much brandy. Dollar and Mrs. Winters complete the trip to the Lake. Johnny is surprised at how heavy the box is, remembering the ease with which Haskins loaded it. Harry calls Johnny and tells him that Eric the butler is dead. When Johnny returns the box has slipped into the lake - she wants to leave it there. Dollar says that a diver will retrieve it. In fact there were two boxes retrieved - one containing Haskins and the other the body of Charles Winters who was supposed to have been washed out to sea. Mrs. Winters admitted all. Haskins had slugged Johnny. Martha killed Eric. A crime wave by a couple of apparently sweet old ladies. United States Armed Forces Radio & TV Service.

She says that he is rarely there, and agrees to let the authorities vacuum the apartment as they look for clues. The lab reports that recently henna-dyed hair was recovered from the apartment. Pearson and Bennett check all the local hair salons and finally learn that Thelma, a local waitress, recently had just such a dye job. They look Thelma up and ask her about her boyfriend - Tobich. Mid-90's down here for the past several days.
Beastly. Yet the wife and I were dumb enough to go to Callaway Gardens yesterday and hike several of the woodland nature trails. (With two, half gallon, nearly frozen bottles of ice water, of course.) Then we did yard work most of the day today. The sun has just about sucked my batteries dry this weekend. Putting the hurts to my tomatoes and peppers, too, no matter how much water they seem to get - it keeps burning up the leaves and buds. And I water after sundown.

That's the kicker - some of my tomatoes are on the side of the house that receives morning sun, so no biggie - I just transplanted them from a pot out front, so we'll see how they do. They're just always thirsty. I have a half dozen others hanging fixed on the back porch, so they're not going anywhere. The other side of the house catches the late day sun, but is pretty well shielded by a lot of shade trees after 6 PM or so, and that's where the bed is with the peppers and squash. I just think I'm being stingy with the water because the wife rails about the water bill all the time, but I'm going to hit them ever harder. Funny thing is, just beside the squash and peppers, I built a bed with strawberries, blueberries, and fall gold raspberries, and they seem to love this stuff, and they basically get the same amount and angle of sun that my apple tree does in the front yard, and it has hundreds of apples this season, but the new growth at the ends of each branch are dry and burned to a crisp, like someone took a flamethrower over it. I've only picked three tomatoes so far this year, and they're scrawny. It's gotta be the lack of water.
