Several of us are sending our children off to college in the fall and are concerned about their safety. Since most campuses have a no carry policy, what are some suggestions on how to "arm" them?
be aware of your surroundings
walk with friends - power in numbers
pepper spray
kubotan
don't accept drinks from friends or strangers without watching it being poured.
Yup.
That is the best advice!!!
The idiot degrees will get you no where.
There I was in line doing Christmas shopping at Pier 1, and the homely check out girl was conversing with one of the customers:
“Oh, I have a degree in acting”.
Yea, that will take her very far. Like check out girl at Pier 1!!!!!!
First and foremost you instill in them the knowledge of exercising COMMON SENSE...then however else they chose to arm themselves will serve them well.
And then for those nights out where you still have to be 100% concealed/careful get one of these. As small as you can find, and 5 rounds of 22 Magnum WILL get your attention; a CCI 40 grain 22 Magnum with FMJ fired from that pistol will penetrate more than 16". You'll get through the bad guy, and having 10 leaking holes (5 in the front, 5 in the back) WILL get anyone's attention.
That pistol is so small you can easily carry/conceal it with anything at any time, and you can keep it in your room in an aspirin bottle so as to avoid the storage concerns.
Two days at Front Sight
... +1, great suggestion and there is an offer out there to take the first course for $100 (instead of $1000+)... complete training, and the four day is even better!
Instead of Mace, buy two Spectracide Wasp/Hornet spray cans for $5 and keep one in the room, one in the car... stream shoots 20+ feet and will disable the attacker while you get away, and looks innocent until needed!!
ymmv
Also never leave your drink anywhere. If you go to the bathroom it goes with you. Pepper spray is good and for places where that is illegal sample size aresole hairspray has the same effect except for a sorter time but you will get the mintute to get away.
Kevlar lined backpack and/or briefcase
A sock full of rocks makes a good club
1st of all, Proverbs 22:6.
2nd, martial arts.
3rd, remember that anything can be a weapon. You don’t necessarily have to use a gun, which is not always handy. (pencils and pens come to mind)
Other items that may come in handy in a pocket or purse:
Pepper Spray
Personal alarm (think panic button)
Stun gun
Kubaton keychain
Black cat keychain
Krav Maga!!!
Unless it’s illegal to carry on campus in that state I would suggest having them carry anyway.
Failing that, get him a good quality knife. Have him practice drawing and opening it. Get him information on self-defense using a knife.
Depending on the state he may not need to be 21. Some states have no age limit, others have anywhere from 18 to 23.
Thanks all. Good information.
Knives are fine if you know how to fight with them.
I’ve never seen anyone not on TV who actually could.
Hair spray can and a flick of her BIC = instant “flamed” problem.
As long as the school doesn’t have metal detectors, I recommend a variation on SSS. Give your kid a carry gun they feel comfortable with size wise and so on, and make them practice regularly. Keep it concealed, make sure it never prints, and they keep their mouth shut about it at all times. All...times. If the situation ever arises when they need it, an infraction of the schools [probably] non-legally-binding prohibition will be the last thing on their mind. Amazingly, school boards of regents are not empowered to make real legislation.
What the hell kind of school are you paying to send your kid to? Our Mother of We Don't Need No Steeeenkin Bill of Rights? How about an off campus apartment? Or just a school NOT run by Nazis?
I forgot about those! I used one one time on a wasp infestation in the yard. I can't imagine what it would feel like to get maced with one. Like you said, sprays 20' and has about 100 times more volume than a mace sprayer.
Send your kid to college in a state that has shall-issue CCW permits and closes down for the first day of hunting season; that way you know they have the right values. Then go with the aforementioned kid to buy a little handgun. And for his/her birthday, do what I did and pay for range time and ammo.
My daughter loves her little LCP. And with good reason: she has needed it.
Condoms.
Other than that, if they re college aged kids and they don’t have the sense enough to come in out of the rain, they are on their own.
No matter what you tell them, they are going to find out for themselves.
Millions have made it through before them. Millions more will come after them.
