He's made his name as an overweight, larger-than-life character throughout his Hollywood career.
But the pounds have been falling off portly actor John Goodman as he showed off a slimmer physique at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles last night.
The 57-year-old, who was rumoured to weigh 28 stone 18months ago, looked almost half the man he was just under a year ago as he attended the AFI Life Achievement Award party.

Hes a Republican.
Oops. I was thinking about the wrong guy. I was thinking about the guy on The Price is Right.
Drew Carey is a Libertarian.
hcg — a lot of Hollywood celebs do it...
I have no use for him. He used to do mean, nasty skits about Linda Tripp on Saturday Night Live. He’s a lefty.
Good for him. Carrying around that much weight is dangerous.
He does have a nice voice.
Odd after the terribly horrible impersonations of Linda Tripp I find it hard to believe he is a republican.
His smarmy portrayal of Linda Tripp on SNL several years ago, and his obvious glee in so doing, makes me seriously doubt your claim.
Indeed (about waists) - Goodman does look a lot better without the extra baggage.
I already explained I was thinking of the guy on The Price is Right. Not the same guy. I don’t know anything about John Goodman. I was thinking about Drew Carey. I don’t know how I got them mixed up.
OK. I know he is very conservative.
He is a liberal. I wish John Candy had lost weight - he was a good guy and sadly died at a young age.
He went on 1000 calories a day. I sat down with a calorie book and looked up the calories for each type of food we ate for dinner....he ate the same thing we did, but in amounts a lot less...I had it figured even to how many tablespoons of gravy he could have with his potatoes...I fixed his dinner plate and set it in front of him.
Some vegetables he loved he could have a cup of at certain times...and he stuck to what he was allowed...sometimes I would cheat a little a he got a small slice of chocolate cake...never had to stop eating something he liked entirely..
He could sit down to a spaghetti dinner and eat a 1/2 of loaf of bread at a meal....loved to eat, but when he decided to lose weight had great will power...
May he rest in peace, passed on 20 years ago...
Wow! That’s great! Sounds like you did a great job helping him to realize his goal.
Good, I always worried he was a candidate for an early death from a heart attack.
Candy I believe at the time of his death was on a diet and had dropped 40 pounds.
Can't say whether the diet was a contributing factor or not.
What would get me laughing sometimes, he’d sadly look at his dinner plate and say, take the bread and butter and give me a can of green beans....I’d take his bread and butter and heat up his green beans...Never knew a man with that much will power when it came to losing weight...
When a man passionately focuses on a goal like a laser beam nothing much can stop him.
