Four earthquakes at Katla in past 12 hours
11 Jun 10 - Four earthquakes have occurred below Iceland's Mýrdalsjökull glacier during the past 12 hours - one within the past hour. Katla Volcano lies beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Iceland earthquake charts updated every two minutes.
I remember reading something about Katla doing its thing a few weeks after the one I can not pronounce, in the past. Guess we will see what comes next.

You mean I JACK A JAW FULL?
I remember hearing something on a Saturday am radio show just a few weeks ago...about a conflagration of events that forcast an ice age. I blew it off...but I think Katla was part of the equation ! I think the orator equated Katla activity with cooling trends. And that Katla in conjunction with other such events led to ..... ugh.
Should have taken better notes.
Is there anything particularly unusual with this type of behavior under Katla?
You mean E-15 aka Eyjaffjallajokel?

ha ha.......wide eyes means....it’s TOO LATE !!

When, not if, Katla goes off Europe is going to feel it much worse than what they received from E-15 since Katla is a much larger volcano.
Probably represents magma movement, probably some of the precursors that scientists have been monitoring
Triple Crown of global cooling could pose serious threat to humanity
Sea surface temperatures, extremely low solar activity and increased volcanic activity would lead to widespread food shortages and famine.
According to Bastardi, The Katla volcano in Iceland is a game changer. If it erupts and sends plumes of ash and SO2 into the stratosphere, any cooling caused by the oceanic cycles would be strengthened and amplified.
You mentioned in the past that Icelandic geologists are intensely monitoring Katla -- but besides Iceland, are other governments deeply concerned?
It just seems that were Katla to seriously blow its top, that results would be utterly catastrophic -- worldwide.
Right??? Or is that sensationalistic??
I don't have access to the data and information that the volcanologists in Iceland (as well as others who are supporting them) have, so I can only lean towards their current assessment, and that is an eruption has a high probability of happening - just when and how big is what they are trying to determine.

I'm sure the governments of Europe are concerned given the mess created by E15 a month or so ago. Our USGS is probably helping as well

I haven't researched the extent and size of Katla, however, I don't think it would be 'catastrophic' in that use of the word. Katla (as well as the other volcanos of Iceland) are above ocean examples of the mid-atlantic rift - a tectonic spreading center where primarily basaltic lavas are produced. These types of lava are generally very fluid in comparison to other types and do not result in huge pressures building up and releasing catastrophically. 'Catastrophic' eruptions are more associated with andesitic or rhyolitic volcanos with lava more pasty. Yellowstone, Mt. St. Helens and Pinatubo are examples of this.
So, if I've read the background on Katla correctly, it has produced very vigorous tephra eruptions as well as some more dacitic explosive ones. It has also produced some of the largest basalt lava flows of recent history. So I would expect to see a relatively high ash column - though larger than E15, huge glacier melt offs and large lava flows. The ash will cause even worse problems for Europe X10, but I would not equate it to the proven world wide impact created when Pinatubo erupted.
Thank you VERY much!!
You explain things so well, you should write a book, it would sell splendidly.
Thanks again for sharing your expertise on these subjects.
I just try to present a valid interpretation of geologic events - as there are too many arm-chair 'geologists' at times here on FR presenting bogus and tin-foil covered 'interpretations' like every time there is a small quake in Yellowstone some raise their voices that she's gonna blow. Glad to be of service in answering your questions.
