In the event that the catastrophe takes place which we all are thinking about and talking about in these days under this regime, whether it be a global financial shut-down (see this scenario: http://www.grandpappy.info/honehour.htm), a military strike somewhere, or some such dire event unleashes sudden freeze-up of our society: How do citizens communicate?
CB? Short wave? Our lifeblood is communication. What are our options to maintain this link to patriots across the country?
You can get these for about 250 buck, and talk to the world...Imagine yourself at the controls of this baby, turning all those knobs....I really like dial and knobs...lol I had one of these and the audio was outstanding...They are still selling used, and many are in excellent condition.
Yep, I’m a ham, so I’m “ready” ... but the key is electricity. If we have that kind of a meltdown, you know the local battery store is gonna’ be “out” of batteries. So I got a little solar rig that charges the batteries and in direct sun can power my little 5 watt qrp rig. Not too expensive and fun to play around with anyway. What I have learned from it is I want to stay with fossil fuel! :-)

I agree this is a serious question. CB radio I expect is the best. I haven’t the faintest idea how to deal with CB radio.
Currently I have one of these.. A kick butt radio with HF and 2 meters..Had it about 10 years now, no troubles...Operates off 12 volts too. In addition to dials and knobs, I really like push buttons too... This one has about 60 knobs and buttons on it....lol

Same in the neighborhood we just moved into. I’ll be making a social visit soon.
1. Get to know your neighbors. Face to face communication works pretty well.
2. Um, I actually like the homing pigeon idea. Our 4-H group is raising them, and is starting to compete.

My son is in the Civil Air Patrol. Every CAP unit has a short wave radio. Find the nearest unit (I think every county in the US has one) and get involved.
All wind generators make some noise ,too. So if stealth is the goal solar is better.

So the grid goes down and maybe a few have generators, but those run only as long as you have fuel. Batteries salvaged from cars will eventually give out. So you're down to solar and wind, which as we know are notoriously unreliable, but may provide sporadic communications if you can rig up an inverter and some kind of charging system. But eventually batteries won't hold a charge and so you'll have to run your radios directly from the source. Pumped storage may be an option if you have land and the topography to set up a reasonable sized (i.e., pretty big) reservoir.
My guess is most communications in the post-meltdown world will be "lip radio". Not much news from the outside world, IOW.
Morse code was used in the telegraph....(Hitting myself on the forehead and saying DUH) Those were the wires I was thinking about....The older I get the more corrections I need...:O(
When we lose power or when we do extended camping, we get by pretty well with a solar panel connected to a deep cell battery. It won’t run a fridge or AC or anything big, but it will charge a laptop, cellphone, walkie talkies, and/or run a low energy LCD TV.
It might work for something like this.
