DETROIT,
- U.S. automaker General Motors put an in-house directive in reverse Thursday, backing away from a memo that asked employees to stop saying "Chevy."
The original memo signed by Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, GM vice president for marketing told employees at the corporation's Detroit headquarters "consistency" is important for the Chevrolet brand -- and it would be helpful in that regard to stop referring to Chevrolets at Chevys, The New York Times reported.
The memo said, "In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet , and need to move toward a consistent brand name."
"When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding," the memo said. "Why is this consistency so important? The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer."
Several newspapers pointed out that "Chevy" has been used in GM advertising for decades and GM quickly retracted the directive on Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported.
GM called the first memo "poorly worded" and said the reaction was proof of "how passionately people feel about Chevrolet."
"We love Chevy. In no way are we discouraging customers or fans from using the name," the second memo said.
Now, if we could only do the same with “war on terror” and “Islamic terrorists”.
This is what happens when the government has too much say in how to run a business.
(that doesn't sound right)
Its Chevrolet to foreigners like Barry O and crew, to us home growns it will always be Chevy.
So how does ‘Coke’ for Coca-Cola differ from ‘Chevy’ for Chevrolet? Most of us say ‘Coke’ and most of us say ‘Chevy’. These retards at GM might just be a part of GM’s problem.
Don’t say “Byfuglien”, say “Big Buff.”
That sort of describes me as well. Now I wouldn’t buy one with YOUR money.
(Oh, and how about those Vegas? Is it true that they were actually made of compressed rust? ;) )
I was pondering the whole latino low rider thing. You don’t see those god-awful things in mexico. After traveling and working in over 20 states of mexico, I think the reason you see them here and not there is because mexico is littered with “topes” (speed bumps) on nearly every road in the country. The speed bumps are not mere speed bumps...the could better be described as small mountains. A low-rider could not be driven 3 miles in mexico without being totaled. Thus, with nice flat roads here, the mexicans feel compelled to drive cars here that they could not drive at home.
Within the whole American Car Kulture, low riders fit just fine.
WE are from the government, and we are here to help.... (the scariest words in the English language)...
So bye-bye, Miss American Pie.
Drove my Chevrolet to the levrolet,
But the levrolet was dry.
There, that sounds better.
It is obvious the lessons of New Coke were lost on these marketing geniuses.
Of course with the NASCAR accent, it's:
Shiver-lay (Shivey) and Fo-word.
