A long time employee of Santa Cruz County died in a freak accident this morning when he was pulled into a tree chipper.
The 61 one year old was working on a road maintenance team clearing brush along Whiting Road in Watsonville at the time.
He had worked for the county since 1969.
The Department of Public Works issued the a statement following his death. "We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our hearts and condolences go out to (the victim's) family and friends."
The Sheriffs Office is investigating the incident along with the county Department of Public Works management.
The identity of the county worker will not be released until family members have been located and notified of the accident.
The crew who witnessed the horrific death are being offered counseling.
Worked since 1969 (41 years) for the county just to have it all end like this. Just damn.
No. A 6 month moratorium and call for a blue ribbon commission!
They back the wood chipper to a catfish pond, fire her up, and dispose of the evidence. Wash it down and return to the rental agency. Problem solved.
At least he can still vote in the next election. Democrat, of course.
No kidding. I bet he was tired, hot, and got pulled in by loose clothing or knocked off balance.
I saw that on one of those crime shows. Gruesome!
I worked in Plywood and lumber mills for about 40 years and that thing that worried most people were the wood chippers, commonly known as “hogs”. They could chew off an arm or hand in seconds. Amazingly enough there were very few accidents involving the hogs, plenty of them with the other equipment, however.
I never did hear if this guy lived or died.
Saw that in the morning firestarter.
You’re right; Stupid should hurt.
