Pac-10 to decide by end of year

PAC-10 Ok's Expansion

SAN FRANCISCO -- Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott emerged from the final day of conference meetings Sunday and announced that university presidents and chancellors have given him all the authority he needs to expand the Pac-10.

"What direction that process takes still could go in different directions, everything from remaining as we are as a Pac-10 that's got some very bright days ahead of it to a bigger conference footprint," Scott said. "I have the authority to take it in different directions, depending on various scenarios and discussions we're going to have."

Scott wouldn't give any timeframe for expansion talks -- other than to reiterate that the deadline is the end of this year -- or discuss specific schools. However, it sounds as if he will aggressively court some of the biggest names in college sports, including Texas. The Big 12 is in danger of collapsing and could provide the Pac-10 with six new teams or more.

The most widely discussed scenario has Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado joining the Pac-10.

I predict in the end, the Texas schools will join the SEC.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
The PAC-10 is one of the most perfect conferences by geographic makeup, culture, and history.

Adding 6 schools east of the rockies is idiotic. Plus 16 teams each year vying for one of the Rose Bowl invites? Ugghhhh.......

I think one of the motivations for the Pac-10 to expand is to almost guarantee a 2nd BCS bid.

The SEC has the huge TV contracts with CBS and ESPN. If you were Texas, where would you go if given the choice. The SEC has much deeper pockets than the Pac-10. And it just makes more sense from a geographical standpoint.

Who is going to watch Texas-Oregon State?

In the SEC you would have Texas-Arkansas and Texas-LSU every year, assuming Texas is in Western Division.

I don’t see the Longhorns joining the SEC. Texas wants its own little fiefdom, and an 8 team “Pac-16 West” would be perfect. Besides, unlike the Big 12 South, SEC schools know how to play defense.

I would never believed that the Big 12 would collapse before the very weak Big East.

the SEC has no use for them....the conference is incredibly strong and they are not going to invite more big time programs in so as to beat the crap out of one another...I think the Big 12 survives, worst cast scenario if Nebraska joins the Big Ten, UT, A&M, TT, OU, OSU, Baylor, Mizzu, K-State, Kansas and may TCU reform the SWC....

Now if only Oregon State were in the SEC, they could play South Carolina every year, it was be Cocks against the Beavers.

The most widely discussed scenario has Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado joining the Pac-10.

And many of those schools were part of the Southwest Conference, which fell apart in the early '90s.

What's the common denominator in the failure of the SWC, and the difficulties with the Big 12? At some point you have to start wondering whether those schools have something to do with the problem.....

The Pac-10 would be foolish to associate itself with them.

Greatest sports headline ever, “Nutt to Replace Dick with Johnson Against Cocks.”

Actually was posted on ESPN for about an hour.

In the Big 12, Texas is the cash cow. Should Texas leave the Big 12 it HAS to take Tex Tech and A&M according to the legislature

It would be nice for Texas to play somebody with clout and not some pansies like UL-Laf in the beginning of the year.

Then we can see if Texas is truly good or just sub par.

I say this as a true Orangeblood from Texas by the way.
