You know, I really had to dredge my memory to even *remember* what that was let lone the last time I used one.
Then it clicked. If I remember right, just before graduation we had to complete a field problem, which include setting up an AN/TRD-4a. I don't think I ever saw one again BUT! it had a goniometer :-)

My EE department built the first Wullenweber in the Americas, out of a dismantled installation from Germany.
I never visited the array (long since torn down), but I did see a goniometer in our machine shop. As I recall, it was a cube about 2 feet on an edge, with a big knob and compass rose on the top, and a jillion coax connectors around the sides.
The EE department got to maintain the array and to use it for various purposes; but when the Navy came in to use it, they kicked all the EE guys out. Not enough clearance, I guess.
