The “Russian Woodpecker” was an over-the-horizon radar. It caused severe interference with other radio services all over the world.
It must have been computer controlled, a burst of CW (morse) would often cause it to shift frequency. I have not heard it in a long time.

Ah yes, the "woodpecker". As a ham radio op for years, this was one aggravating NOISE out there on the spectrum. For those who "wonder" what it sounds like, Wikipedia comes through for us again. Go

Me neither. It used to raise havoc on the ten meter ham radio band. I did see a large antenna array near Pripyat/Cnernobyl area. It has been shut down since the accident. I found it using google earth.

I remember the Russian Woodpecker, it interfered with CB and Ham radio back in the 80s.
