BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Law enforcement sources have confirmed to NBC that Natalie Holloways mother Beth Holloway was targeted by Joran van der Sloot in an alleged extortion scheme.
Thursday U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance announced extortion and wire fraud charges against van der Sloot.
Vance claimed van der Sloot sold false information about Natalie Holloways disappearance and circumstances surrounding her death to someone in Birmingham.
Vance said $15,000 was wired from Birmingham to the Netherlands on May 10, 2010 and that van der Sloot was ultimately seeking $250,000.

NBC: Always a day late with breaking news.
This is new....US Federal authorities just came out with this today.
I can’t believe articles are saying she ‘financed’ his trip. It’s unfairly accusatory for this poor woman who just wants to bury her child.
This Van der Sloot is the worst of the worst of human beings.
Put the scumbag out of HER misery..............
I would settle for slow rotting in a horrible prison conditions of Peru. He will develop a death wish soon enough. He can channel the spirit of the disgusting leftist Lori Berenson.
Huh?????
Cold comfort to Beth Holloway that this creep will suffer indignities galore in a South American prison.
Hope they keep that animal healthy & in enough STD meds & KY to satisfy every interested inmate (twice).
Just the word I was thinking of.
It was announced yesterday afternoon.
I did not see it in the news....only that he was in Chile.
Why would Beth Holloway wire $15,000 to the Netherlands? I don’t get it.
For a little while, he claimed he sold Natalee to someone as a sex slave. Now I’m beginning to wonder if that was indeed true and if that is the way he makes a living.
Formal charges may have come down today, but Shemp was talking about the extortion on the Fox Report yesterday.
No matter... formal charges being filed is newsworthy.
A news story needs to leak out that in exchange for leniency he has fingered the other two brothers who were accomplices in Natalie’s disappearance and that indictments are being prepared. Then we sit back and wait for them to come running with their lawyers and the real story on this scumbag.
It was actually a sting operation tho the story didn't say that.......
He told her that he would tell her where her daughter’s body was buried for $250,000. The $15,000 was a down-payment.
Because she wants her baby back. Desperate people do desperate things.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Hopefully the US indictment won’t allow daddy to have him transferred to a US prison.
