Our nearest garden store is the Ace Hardware and they have a lot of plants with small white labels abbreviated with a felt marker so I was familiar with your dilemma. We can’t grow tomatoes outdoors here on the shore of Humboldt Bay without a blight due to the drizzle, like today, yesterday, last week, all of May and the rest of June...

Actually, I’m not sure what my tomatoes are going to come out like - we’ve had some pretty strange weather conditions here, this year... (Southern New Mexico)

(Disclaimer - I’m a ‘beginner’ gardener, learning-by-doing, so I’ve already made some pretty - in hindsight - obvious mistakes... )

We had a very long cold season this year, which didn’t break until well into May - overnite temps in the low 30’s as late as the second week in May, but, thankfully, no frost, or there would have been no tomatoes at all to worry about, since I had to put my seedlings in the ground the last 2 weeks in April or lose ‘em in their tray on my windowsill...

So, for the next 2-3 weeks, they just sat there - wouldn’t grow and wouldn’t die - and then just this last week, when they finally started to get brave and start growing, we’ve had a string of 100-degree-plus days, so I think those poor plants don’t know what to think, anymore....

So, it’ll be interesting to see if they actually recover and fruit, or whether the odd conditions have made them too neurotic... ;)

I saw this posted a few days or a week ago. Seems to be localized up around the Memphis area.

Tubebender is a good detective. I would have sent you to Mr. Roy’s candle factory in Vernon. But, you’d think that the write up would have included a picture! I feel cheated.

Just picked two ripe Cherokee Purple tomatoes that I grew indoors over the winter! I will plant it in the garden in a week or so.

That’s pretty — a lot like perennial salvia. It does look like candles. Thanks.

How is you Garlic doing? I fear most of mine will rot because of the unusual late wet weather but we do have the healthiest weeds in the US. I am going to lose my Blueberry crop to the birds if I don’t get the rest of the netting replaced soon but there have been a lot of things going on that mess up a good day when we got one whenever that will be. Oh Yeah... we are having March winds also...

The garlic is up, but only about 12-18 inches tall. I was successful in keeping potatoes over the winter for 7 months or so. I planted in two stages. The first planting had 2 ft of snow a week later and I thought they were lost, but they are coming up now. I planted the rest a few weeks ago. I have numerous varieties of heirloom tomatoes, several varieties of summer and winter squash, jalapeno and banana peppers, and eggplant in containers that I will probably bring inside tonight because the temps will drop into the 30’s. The apple trees I planted last year have flowers on them (3 varieties for cross pollination). Not sure I should let them produce fruit so soon after being planted.

Thanks for the pings!
Your cauliflower looked great!
Was it yummy? How did you prepare it?

My snow peas are finally flowering, but they have grown 2 feet above the mesh I installed for them. I’ll have to train them over the other side of the mesh, or they will fall on, and cover, the tomatoes.

LOL, I need more beds.

Tubebender, I wish you dry winds and following seeds.
;-)

It must be such a challenge to garden in that climate.

Very impressive.

I am sure this is true for thinning apples but you want to be careful that you separate the apple from the tree carefully leaving the spur on the tree as this is where future fruit forms. My wife’s ex-sis in law grows 700 trees of 50 varieties on 2.5 acres (small trees close plantings) and she has to train every new U-Pick customer to do that. Do a internet search on that and there may even be videos on the technique...

Last year was my first year trying gardening up here at 8,500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies. I am just trying different things to see what works and what does not. One thing I learned was that I need to start things indoors so there is more time for plants to get large before the first freeze. I will probably start several things indoors in the fall so they produce before I can plant outdoors.

I can’t imagine trying to grow vegetables in your climate.

At least in Alaska, they have the midnight sun to grow the crops.
