KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 9-year-old Howard County girl critically injured by a pit bull over the weekend died at an Indianapolis hospital on Thursday, police said.
The attack happened in the 4600 block of East County Road 200 South on Saturday, said Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert.
The girl, Savannah Gragg, underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, but died Thursday afternoon.
Police said that Savannah was opening a door at the home to let the dog outside when it jumped on her and knocked her to the floor, biting her on the neck and shaking her violently.
"The child suffered a lacerated trachea, which resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain," Talbert said in a news release Thursday evening. "Doctors determined the child was brain dead shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday."
Family members told police that the dog had never shown aggression before.

I have checked out your home page. We have much in common. My girls also love Type O Neg. I’ve seen Alice live in concert three times.
Good stuff.
MEDIA BIAS
“When is a scratch considered a front page dog mauling story? When the dog has short hair, nobody got a good look at it, and it might have been a pit bull. So, when is a serious dog bite unworthy of anything more than a photo caption on the back page of the newspaper? When the dog is an AKC registered Akita show dog and wins Open Bitches at the Oklahoma City Summer Classic all breed show. Even more insulting, the Daily Oklahoman dismissed this embarrassing incident with the title In the line of duty and excused this breach of canine etiquette by making sure to mention that the attack occurred because another dog crossed the path of the Akita and bit her. Never mind the poor judge captured memorably on film trying to keep the blood off his suit.
If this incident had happened at an ADBA or AADR sanctioned American Pit Bull Terrier show the dog would have been banned for life, its points for that show rescinded without a refund and the owner/handler immediately escorted off the show grounds by security.
Further, the dog most likely would be euthanized regardless of titles or pedigree as we have a zero tolerance for man biters within the fraternity. But the Akita did not lose her award, show officials said, according to the Oklahoman.”
“Pit bulls/pit bull mixes/pit bull types” are specifically mentioned in breed ban legislation.
Therefore, following your hearty enthusiasm for “killing every pit bull”, you’d *have* to kill her dog because it legally qualifies as a pit bull mix/pit bull type.
I know it’s too much to even hope for, but *now* do you see how the whole “breed ban” becomes murky, at best?
Lost of things crossed with Labs look like Pit mixes.
You got the time to DNA a dog before you shoot it?
[Mastiffs are “on the list” already, too. Sucks, don’t it? You’re batting a thousand, so far]
Type O is no more.
Pete died in April.
“Therefore, following your hearty enthusiasm for killing every pit bull,”
Site the post where I said what you quote me having said.
You have 30 minutes to withdraw that or be a liar.
That sucks. I was never a fan, but my daughters liked him.
Your precious pit bull in this story tore out a girl’s throat. That is not a “scratch”.
Yeah. Maybe you “Operator” 1COUNTER-MORTER-68 should toss in an antifreeze meatball into the mix.
I wouldn’t bat an eye at someone who defended themself from a vicious dog. I’m not saying roaming dogs shouldn’t be shot, or that pitbulls are all loveable fluffballs who pose no threat to anyone, or that the owners shouldn’t be held responsible for each and every problem their dog causes.
But when Freepers, of all people, start calling for breed bans and lynch mobs, it freaks me out because they’re being swept along by emotion towards an empty, nanny-state future. I never thought I’d see certain kinds of toilets banned, or lightbulbs, but that’s already happened, and pets are on the list.
LEL asked:
“Your compatriots dont just joke about it; if their claims are to be believed, they poison dogs with alarming frequency. Or is it okay if the dog is a pit bull?”
To which you replied:

Grunthor to LongElegantLegs
Without a DOUBT it is ok if it is a pit bull.
You just stated it was okay without a DOUBT to poison any dog who is a pit bull.
Seems we have a Mexican standoff.
Either those are your own words, endorsing the dog poisoners *or* I’m a liar.
Your call.
Well I believe we have a misunderstanding. You quoted me as saying that I want all pit killed.
I never said that.
Guess that means you don't want any fresh lobsters from Maine. OK
Recap:

2. A poster named Daffynition calls her on it

4. Salamander calls Daffy a liar
5. Salamander apparently doesn't want fresh Maine *lobsta*
6. Daffy goes away for the weekend laughing at the thin-skinned lizard's absurdities, thanking her for the miles-'o-smiles
[Hey if the reason you're so cranky is that you're not getting any, that's your problem ...I'm off to Maine]
You keep saying “I’m off to Maine”...but you’re still here. How can we miss you if you won’t go away?
I already shoot stray labs and goldens on sight. I'll add pugs to the list.
Kinda my way of showing solidarity with pit haters.
If it will be of any help to you, I’ll be glad to take the lobsters.
Just that poisoning a dog was ok as long as it’s a pit bull.
I don’t really see the point in splitting semantic hairs.
You have now exceeded your week’s phoniness quotient.
Go eat your scum-sucking, bottom dwelling garbage filters with your Yankee buddies.
[You sure do post an awful lot of thinly veiled sexual innuendo to me...but the answer’s absolutely “no”. I prefer men.]
You say semantics, I say if you are qoing to QUOTE someone, do it honestly.
His death was a surprise that was really not that surprising, considering.
Too many years of “substances” and the ever-present issue of heart problems in very tall men caught up with him.
If there’s a “bright side”, he regained his faith and rejoined the church a couple years ago.
I may be unhappy that he’s gone but I’m very happy where he’s gone *to*.
