KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 9-year-old Howard County girl critically injured by a pit bull over the weekend died at an Indianapolis hospital on Thursday, police said.
The attack happened in the 4600 block of East County Road 200 South on Saturday, said Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert.
The girl, Savannah Gragg, underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, but died Thursday afternoon.
Police said that Savannah was opening a door at the home to let the dog outside when it jumped on her and knocked her to the floor, biting her on the neck and shaking her violently.
"The child suffered a lacerated trachea, which resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain," Talbert said in a news release Thursday evening. "Doctors determined the child was brain dead shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday."
Family members told police that the dog had never shown aggression before.

[or should I just mention the dirty little dentition secrets about Pugs and why they really cant do a *whole* lot of damage because of genetically defective teeth?]
So then the boys wasn’t badly hurt. Good.
You’re here condemning pits and ~you~ have a “guard” Mastiff?
*Now* I’ve seen it all.
No. I WILL HAVE a Mastiff. I would never own a Pit. I have young nephews, nieces and I hope to have grandchildren. I’d like to keep them intact.
But what are you going to say when people are trying to ban the pug breed? How are you going to prove that your dogs don’t suffer from their structural wierdness?
The people behind this push for breed specific legistlation don’t care about people’s safety, they’re trying to do away with pet ownership. If they can get their foot in the door by whipping people into a frenzy over a ‘dangerous’ breed, they’re not going to stop at pit bulls. That English Mastiff you have? Those are man killers, born and bred for it. Better ban those too.
Once they have control over all the scary dogs, they’ll come after the pugs and the poodles.
Pitbulls, are to canines, what Islam is to religion.
“But what are you going to say when people are trying to ban the pug breed?”
Who is doing that? What breed do you think will get banned first, the Pug or the Pit?
The key word there is ‘first’. You think that by feeding my dog to the crocodile, he won’t get yours in the end?
I’d rather feed your dog to the croc than to feed one of the neighborhood children to your dog.
And as to who is doing it, check out PETA! The National Humane Society!
“ABC News in Atlanta is taking a cue from us and following the money donated to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). And the results arent pretty. The animal rights industry leader with the misleading name gives less than 4 cents of every dollar of its budget to support local animal shelters. The rest of the money, as WSB-TV Channel 2 News confirmed? It funds the groups activist projects and lobbying for vegetarian-minded legislation.”
Please, you seem like an intelligent dog lover, open your eyes to what’s happening!
Well, good luck with *that*, then.

Don’t worry.
The AKC standard for mastiffs is pretty much in line with AmStaffs....”great with kids”.
Cross your fingers that you get a “nice” one.
I’m sorry but there was nothing at all in that link that answered the question that I assume you were trying to answer.
As you can see, my dog doesn't even look like a pit bull. Would you poison him because I told you he is one?
I wonder who attacks more childer, the Mastiff or the Pit?
I would not have any large, or even medium sized dog around any child under the age of about 6. My lil sis was bitten by the family dog when she was about 5. Fortunately, the biting dog was a little wiener dog, and all she got was a small scar near her eye. Freaked me out so bad, I ran for 20 minutes to a friend’s house who’s father was a Doctor.
You wanted to know who’s behind the push to ban pet ownership. These national organizations, funded by animal lovers from all over the country who are too complacent to pay attention to what their donations are really funding.
Bigger question:
~Which~ breed will be near *your* kids and how much will “statistics” matter, then?
It’s a roll of the dice.
Toss wisely, Grasshopper.
“Either you’re free to own a dog, and take responsibility for that dog and it’s actions, or you’re not”
I wonder what the percentage is of “responsible Pit Bull owners.”
“As you can see, my dog doesn’t even look like a pit bull. Would you poison him because I told you he is one?”
Your dog is clearly a mix. Would I kill a dog just for what he is? Probably not. Would I kill a Pit that was off the leash, roaming the neighborhood in search of a nice tasty baby? I wouldn’t hesitate any longer than I would before I step on a cockroach.
