Peru (or any other country for that matter) doesn’t have to worry about a suspect’s civil rights. The U.S. is way too “civilized” in that regard. Perhaps Peru doesn’t do waterboarding, but I’m reasonably sure they have other, more effective means of “correcting.”
What does this mean?
I am not certain, but I presume that if one goes to Anita van der Sloots FACEBOOK page, that she probably wrote some gushing comments about the actor Richard Gere, or maybe she puffed up some of the films he appears in. Maybe he’s her favorite actor?? Maybe she is a rabid fan of his?
I don’t believe that Joe Tacopino went to school with Paulus. Also, Joe said that he would NOT represent JVDS as he is unfamiliar with Peruvian laws and the legal system in Peru.

Sure. I’m not a lawyer and am no legal scholar. But the code Napoleon was instituted in numerous countries and is a sort of alternative to the common law basis that English speaking countries (i.e. U.K. amd U.S.). It is different from our system in that the judges (there are usually 3) have both a fact finding mission as well as a trial and punitive one. Basically, the judges are very active participants in the process. Depending on the country, you may or may not have a right to jury trial in criminal cases. I don’t think there is a right to jury trial in Peru.
Anyway, the question was the presumption of guilt or innocence. Theoretically, Napoleonic code countries have a presumption of innocence. And that may even be codified. The reality, though, is that with the judges taking on what is really a quasi-prosecutorial role, that presumption of innocence in theory is a presumption of guilt in reality.
I’ll also say this. Jury trials in the U.S. (OJ Simpson’s first trial notwithstanding) often result in a harsher treatment to the defendant than if they had plea bargained or allowed the judge to try them without a jury. So a jury trial is actually becoming more and more unusual in the U.S. In Virginia, a criminal trial by jury is becoming downright rare. Mostly because the defendants avoid them like the plague.
I think that comparing the legal system is a bit academic when it comes to this case. The evidence against him is damning. A credible witness saw the two together at the approximate time of the murder, and this is corroborated by video. Regardless of the system, this would be a tough case to successfully defend. Doubly so in Peru.
I think that the maximum sentence is 35 years, but that’s also academic given the state of the Peruvian prison system.
I hope the psychopath brought butter and jam with him, because any way you slice it, he’s toast.

Dave mentioned something VERY interesting, that the hotels in Aruba all broadcast American news shows, and thus the 5th Anniversary of his daughter's disappearance would have started being broadcast that morning around 8 am.......

Mansur says the two other suspects in the Holloway case, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, are still believed to live on the island. They have kept a very low profile. He believes they should be worried Joran may try to implicate them in the disappearance of Natalee to get a better deal in Peru...."

Joran is under investigation in Thailand for attempting to entice young girls into the Amsterdam sex trade by offerring them jobs as "dancers" in Holland.
I want to know if Joran was being TRAINED by his father & associates and if they were all part of the mob in a country which has been referred to as, MAFIA ISLAND.
