A woman is suing Google for more than US$100,000 after following directions on Google Maps and being hit by a car.
Lauren Rosenberg, from Utah, using her Blackberry phone, followed the site's directions onto Deer Park Drive, which turned out to be a rural highway with no footpath.
Instead of looking for an alternative route, Rosenberg tried to follow the road for the half-mile Google Maps had suggested, but was hit by a passing vehicle.
"As a direct and proximate cause of defendant Google's careless, reckless and negligent providing of unsafe directions, plaintiff Lauren Rosenberg was led onto a dangerous highway, and was thereby stricken by a motor vehicle, causing her to suffer severe permanent physical, emotional and mental injuries," her lawsuit reads.
Google's mapping service states the directions service is a beta product that is, in a state of development and not necessarily accurate but this warning is not displayed on Blackberry phones.
Imagine a GPS is handy for a truck driver (most times) if it does`nt get you in a mess
I`m still using a 1998 about wore out Rand Mcnallly for the road
Love the Garmin on my bass boat tho
Thisis the problem with navigational software and systems. If the data or software has a problem at all and anyone is injured they will sue the manufacturer, even if they are to blame 100%.
Laura Rosenberg. What a shock.
Hit her again.
For traveling, I never buy a map anymore. The GPS routes are suggestions only. I find the GPS maps, though, to be more accurate than any of the paper maps, but I frequently modify the route because I prefer driving the smaller rural highways over the Interstate-centric GPS routes.
Maybe the plaintiff should sue her parents for making her stupid.
She sounds like the kind of person who needs led around be a keeper.
LOL!
The judge should require her to demonstrate how her blackberry explicitly instructed her to “next 2 miles, walk in front of moving traffic”.
I distrust and dislike Google for many reasons, but this I cannot get behind. This is probably why Google never actually promotes ANY product beyond “beta” (in the software industry we call it the “Google lifecycle”, hype -> beta -> discontinued).
Don’t Text while walking down the middle of the road. Check your tailtight, it may be out/

What do you call 500 lawyers at the bottom of the sea?
A good start!
I agree, I do the same when I have a little confidence in the route. The problem comes when the GPS routes are hosed. Sometimes the suggestions can get you into trouble. That's where the map comes in. Either a paper map or a soft map.
I've recently started using GPS and maps on my new iPad. TomTom seems to provide the better routes, but the maps from MotionX GPS are much better.
What? Google installed a ring in her nose and attached a chain to it...by which a Google employee could lead her around? Seems odd to me.
using her Blackberry phone, followed the site's directions onto Deer Park Drive, which turned out to be a rural highway with no footpathTurns out it wasn't a blackberry phone, it was an *actual blackberry*. [old purloined joke alert, now that it's too late]
If Google told you to jump off a bridge, would you?
