OK,, I have a pretty good selection of firearms, Ak47's, Bolt guns, .22's, 30-30's, shotguns, several good pistols and a gun safe. (ammo for all) But I don't have a AK74. Are there known reliable models out of the box?(the ammo is pretty cheap now)I've even heard of some of the cheaper models key-holing.
I have been told that Century builds are hit/miss, and Saiga's have that funny trigger. For under $600 bucks,, (no I don't want an AR) what model AK74 is available?
(PS,, I love AR's, but I have been told that as long as you have an Armorer, go with the AR,, if you don't,,, go with the AK)

Keep in mind AK-74 ammo is corrosive and US built 74’s do not have chrome lining so it seems like a waste of money.

Whoever told you that you need an armorer to keep an AR running is full of scheisse.

For get all the stuff about ARs. Years old. I have a Colt MT6700. A Klintonized version of AR. Best damned AR I’ve owned. Tack driver.
Is it tedious to clean? Yes. Has it ever jammed? No.
Then again, nothing wrong with AKs either. Best for you to try firing as many types as you can. THEN buy. Like buying a new car.

Stop screwing around and buy a BMG and be done with it.

Why don't you tell use what your thoughts are, your possibilities that you are considering,
and what you want to do with it.
Then, we can help.

My two centavos: AR-15's are a bit of a pain to clean and maintain, but they work well and are accurate far beyond the range of an AK-47. The 5.56 (cal .223) round is obviously smaller and offers less muzzle velocity, but its trajectory is far flatter than that of the larger, more powerful 7.62x51 as fired from an AK, most of which are crudely made, by comparison. Couple an AR-15 with a good holographic and/or laser sight and it is extremely accurate in my experience.

Naw man...there's all kinds of non-corrorsive 5.45MM X 39MM ammo out there from Wolf and many others. Go to the KVAR web site for a great selection of AK-74s.

The one gun I really want is a SA Socom2 .308 rifle.

Keep in mind AK-74 ammo is corrosive and US built 74s do not have chrome lining so it seems like a waste of money. Cleaning up after shooting corrosive ammo is really no big deal, especially with an AK. Simply field strip, spray soapy water down the barrel, swab or follow up with WD-40, wipe out the chamber and wipe off the bolt with a soapy rag, rinse with WD-40, and clean as normal when you get home.
Saigas have chrome-lined bores and are easy to convert to AK-74 format, and many builders use chrome-lined bores in their new AK-74 builds.
At a dime a round, it's hard to beat 5.45x39. Buy it cheap, stack it deep. :)

“Whoever told you that you need an armorer to keep an AR running is full of scheisse.”
All of my friends with AR based weapons have far more trouble with them than those with AR based weapons.
The literature seems to verify this observation.
The Daowoo DR-200 is an exception, but it has an AK action.
Just mentionin’.

I am happy with the polish tantal but it doesn’t have a scope rail.
I will eventually add a beyrl rail to mine.
I hear the bulgarian models are very good.
