Lincoln Public Schools needs to re-emphasize its commitment to multicultural education in the wake of the "green card" incident on an Omaha soccer field last week, several people told the Lincoln Board of Education on Tuesday.
"We need to rethink and readdress our multicultural perspective," said Marty Ramirez, a longtime Lincoln resident and community activist. "We need to go beyond token gestures."
In the 1970s, there was a lot of energy focused on multicultural education, but that energy seems to have diminished, he said.
Last week, in the moments after Lincoln East High School's boys soccer team beat Omaha South for the Class A state title, handmade "green cards" were tossed into the air as fans rushed the field. About 60 percent of Omaha South students are Latino, and the cards were an apparent reference to immigration status.
Ramirez was among six people who spoke to the school board during its Tuesday meeting, commending East High administrators and students for their reaction to the incident but stressing that it must be a catalyst for change.
"We have a grand opportunity to renew our commitment to diversity," he said.
East High administrators condemned the incident, and "less than five" students were suspended. A group of East High students met to discuss what they could do to make amends and educate others. They met with a group of Omaha South students last week, upperclassmen have spoken to ninth-grade classes and other exchanges are planned.
Kathy Danek, the newly elected board president, told those who spoke that the board values diversity.
"We found the incident that happened reprehensible," she said.
Miguel Carranza, a sociology and ethnic studies professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said he appreciated that Danek had written an apology to the Omaha South officials, but he wished she'd expressed her opinions to the Lincoln community as well.
Shirley Mora James, president of the Nebraska Hispanic Bar Association, said she plans to gather affidavits from parents about similar incidents that have happened in other schools and meet with those schools. She learned of those other incidents during discussions with parents after last week's incident.
James and others were critical of the lack of response from the Nebraska School Activities Association. She urged NSAA officials to develop a policy and procedures to react to racially motivated incidents at sanctioned games. The Nebraska Coaches Association also needs to address the issue, she said.
"The assumption that all Latinos are illegal is insulting," James said. "It's 2010. We are not living in the 1950s anymore."
Cathy Maestas Graham, a teacher at LPS, said she recently heard of an incident where a Latino student was given a racially derogatory note and didn't feel comfortable telling anyone at the school.
That illustrates the work that needs to be done, she said, and she urged district officials to enlist the help of multicultural liaisons and others in the district.
Ramirez said the incident is a microcosm of what's happening in the city, state and country.

I, for one, do not plan on renewing my “commitment to diversity”. I never had a “commitment to diversity”.
Diversity has been proven to be nothing more than a trojan horse carrying a virulent and terminal disease designed to destroy Western/Judeo-Christian morals, faith, family, and ultimately, civilization.
I will, however, be glad to renew and expand my commitment to national and Judeo-Christian cultural uniformity.
Nature operates best this way, and it also appears to be God’s plan as the best model for healthy human civilization.
Things have certainly changed. It's 2010 and today it's a fair assumption that most Latinos/as you meet are in this country ILLEGALLY, and further that they are probably a citizen of a single near-by country called Mexico!
Or, maybe she's not "ignant", but knows better and is lying through her teeth!
"Green Cards? We don't need no stinkin' Green Cards! Oh wait.... GOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best,
Chris
We sure do. We need to kill it. It needs to die a painful death.
How incredibly creative. They said nothing, made no racial slurs, insulted no one. They merely threw some green colored confetti into the air and the liberals got undie knotted.
When you throw a stone into a pack of dogs the one that yelps is the one you hit. I guess there must have been some illegals in the crowd that got hit. Too bad, too sad. If they are that offended they should just pick up their toys and go back to their own country. On second thought, even if they aren't offended they should leave.
Why is anyone in administration upset with this? It's not like they chased down the illegals with cars and baseball bats (Illegal bashing should be a recognized sport. Kind of like somali pirate skeet).
My hat's off to the students who came up with this.
So much of this problem could be solved by a massive effort to enforce our existing immigration laws. What is the point of passing any kind of Immigration “Reform” if the gov’t will not enforce the laws? New laws can be ignored just as easily as old ones.
But no! Rather than stopping illegal immigration, we must instead accommodate the illegals in every way. Celebrate diversity! Let's not solve the problem, but instead learn to accept & celebrate all the other problems created by this mess.
Pure idiocy!
In fact, this verse fits quite well with many of the liberal’s beliefs.
America is not about diversity. It's about a citizenry that holds very firm beliefs regarding God, guns, freedom and guts, and knowing how to use them to do what's right.
America became the greatest nation in history not by trying to diversify, but by embracing those who would embrace our beliefs and use their diversity to enhance, not change, us!
This is what passes for thought and initiative in some corners of this nation. A stream of meaningless twaddle straight from the hothouse of academia.

“The assumption that all Latinos are illegal is insulting”
Green cards implies that they are legal. The feigned indignation is just a bullying tactic to intimidate. One form of intimidation is to con others into accepting a false premise.
Here is my multi-cultural plan: deport or imprison ALL illegal aliens, seal/secure the border with a fence and substantial troop presence, SHOOT anyone who tries to cross our border illegally.
As one would expect from the Red Star, this is less a news story than a propaganda piece. A lot of prissy bureaucrats and nobodies wring their hands and boo-hoo about the “reprehensible” incident, but the fact is, it was a trivial prank.
Get over it and quit trying to score political goals.
why isnt this story about suppressing clearly political speech? SCOTUS holdings in Tinker and Morse clearly support with the prankster kids’ right to throw the cards.

Multiculturalism = Cultural Marxism.
“None of this crap would be happening if we had secure borders, & most illegals were quickly caught & sent home.”
I would say that the green cards were as much of a protest against the Feds and their lack of will to enforce our border laws as well as the illegals who reside here on our dime.
