A British endurance swimmer summoned the peak of his powers to become the first person to swim under the summit of Mt. Everest, Sky News reported Sunday.

Lewis Gordon Pugh battled freezing waters wearing only a pair of Speedos, a cap and goggles to cross the one kilometer (0.62 miles) glacial lake next to the Khumbu Glacier.

He came close to drowning during test swims for the event amid bouts of altitude sickness on the Pumori Lake, which sits 17,000 feet above sea level.

But an adapted approach saw him through to complete the swim in a time of 22 minutes and 51seconds.

Pugh has battled ice-cold water before, swimming "with speed and aggression" in Antarctica and across the North Pole.

Big deal. I’ve been swimming below Mt. Everest since I was 2.

I fell in the SF Bay once in March without a lifevest on and I was out there for 7 minutes before I got back in the boat. That was plenty enough for me thank you.

In the words of British mountaineer George Mallory as to why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest--"because it's there."

"Because it's there" is Mallory's single best-known utterance -- ironically, since it was a reporter's one-liner that Mallory himself almost certainly never said...

To steal a line, “I don’t care where you’re from, that’s funny, right there.”

And on point. I used to look forward to it as a kid for pictures of bare-breasted brown ladies in Africa with neck rings and plates in their lips.

In recent years, it’s been more about skinny Asian boys climbing vines.

I miss those girls but I bet they had trouble pronouncing “P” and “S.” Not a disqualifier, though.
