An 81-year-old Army vet from East Northport, Long Island is now behind bars for killing a squirrel. William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations.
His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia and hypothyroidism. She told the paper, "He has a lot of confusion and dizziness. Hopefully, the people in there have respect for the elderly."

If he skins them and cooks them up I have no problem. If not, I don't find that very ethical.

he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia Dimentia and a pellet gun are not good friends. This guy does not belong in jail, but perhaps in a nursing home.

People should be able to kill rodents on their property.

Squirrels are rats with bushy tails. They dig up bulbs and make a damn nuisance of themselves. It’s a freaking pellet gun. Pay the old man bounty and buy him more pellets!

So, you think rodents should live if not eaten?
I’d hate to see you with rats.

Agreed, but he's also on video baiting and torturing them. He has done this dozens of times. Still, I think the sentence is inappropriate, a bit much for rodents.

We have a log home in TN that the squirrels are chewing apart. I hate them. We have all the ends of the logs wrapped in tin foil - looks really great.
Anyone know how to keep them from chewing the house?

I have no problems with baiting and torturing rodents.
Sticky glue traps for mice comes to mind. They can be messy, but by no means should they be made illegal because of a mouse’s welfare.
Animals can not have rights. This man should be paid for his extermination service.

If you think squirrels are bad you should have a problem with woodchucks. Those things are a disaster in the making. They make tunnels in your yard about six inches wide and tear up your lawn.
They are NOT cute and cuddly.

This is even more disturbing since granny had sent him out to rustle up some possum and buzzard eggs for the stew.

It's not like squirrels can get in your house, chew up your wiring, and burn down your house.
 Oh, wait....
