A lot of folks switch optics all the time as their needs evolove or their preferences change. So a lot of good used optics are on the market. You can get an Aimpoint for around $300 used on gun selling sites. Or you can try some of the mostly Chinese “Brand X” stuff in the 100-200 dollar range. Some of them are pretty good, I’m told. I’d steer clear of the 50-100 dollar stuff on CheaperThanDirt etc.
I have an aimpoint, but I’d check the other less expensive stuff on the various forums that do gun reviews.
c-more sights are 289-300
I understand Bushnell is about to come out with one similar to the EoTech but closer to $300. Keep an eye on eBay. I’ve seen some good values on the EoTechs there.
I have Aimpoints and others, but I’ve found the Bushnell Holosight XLP to be very good and a whole lot cheaper.

If you look around, you can pick up an EOTech for $350. And if you like the EOTech, then go with it. I got a 551 for $300 a couple of years back, and I found myself surprised at how much I grew to like it over time. The newer models have made it a lot easier to turn them on/off & adjust the reticle intensity.
I also managed to bash it really good once, and it didn't bother it a bit. That's where the cheaper sights will often let you down.

I know of a place that has Aimshot (Mfg in Georgia) for aroung $160. Send me a private email if interested.
I always liked the iron sights on the AR-15. I had a Colt scope on my first AR-15, but there was a tiny bit of play between the upper and lower. Not noticeable except it seemed less accurate with the scope than without it.
Someone made a wedge to keep them tight. I never tried it and it seems that today that is not a problem. Still I think I would prefer the iron sights, that is if I had one now.
Last year I bought a Bushnell optic that looks very similar to the ACOG, and performs more than good enough for what I use it for. I also like the iron sights that are on top of it. They aren’t perfect irons, but plenty good enough in the event of an optics failure.
I paid $150 for mine. It was a breeze to sight in, and has been very reliable for me over the year that I’ve owned it. If you get one, just remember to turn the damn thing off when you’re done using it. lol
The batteries for it are ‘common’ and inexpensive, by the way.
What am I using? The Hakko Electropoint
That being said I've got a couple of the Bushnell's, too. One is on my wife's Mini-14 and the other is on a Mossberg shotgun.
Since they were 1/10th the price of the Aimpoint I pretty much consider them to be disposable. I've already got a back up unit for them.

1. The reticle in the HUD is too big for accurate shooting outside of what it was designed for: Under 200 yards and CQB.
2. The reticle washes out easily in daylight unless you have the brightness cranked up to max ('11'). When it's at max, the reticle gets even bigger and fuzzier, reducing your visible range.
3. The EOTech is a battery eater no matter which model you get. If you're going to get one, get the one with CR123 batteries.
4. My older model has control buttons mounted on the rear. That's annoying. They relocated the buttons to the side, which is better.
5. My first EOTech burnt up. It was one of the models that had a short circuit problem and died in about 80 rounds fired. They replaced it no questions asked and were fast about it.
Good thing is that I didn't spend a HUGE amount of money on the EOTech, but if all you need to do is throw up a red dot in your field of view to aim with, a C-More sight can do just as well for about $100. The best single red dot is an Aimpoint. They run for thousands of hours off the battery and some guys don't even bother to turn them off with the switch.
My favorite and hands down best sight that I have is a Trijicon ACOG TA31F.
Primary Arms Micro Dot (Gen 2)
Micro Dot with Removable Base.(Larue knockoff)
■ Ultra sharp 4 MOA dot ■ Uses 1 CR2032 battery (included) ■ 11 brightness settings. Visible in bright sunlight ■ The front glass is coated and angled to prevent glare ■ Waterproof ■ One year warranty ■ Bikini covers included ■ Only weighs 4oz ■ Optional riser pictured allows for a lower 1/3 cowitness on flat top AR-15/M-16 ■ Will fit risers designed for the Aimpoint T1, but because of the position of the LED you may not be able to cowitness.
Basically it is a knock-off of an Aimpoint Micro T-1.
There is a very good review of it at LightFighter in the optics section. LINK (not sure if you can see that without registering)
I would not want it for serious work, but it should be good for the range.
I run an Aimpoint Micro T-1 and love it. WITH the 50,000 hour battery life, I never turn the thing off, so it is ready to rock 24/7.
