GIRARD - The owner of the dog whose bite left a 12-year-old with more than 100 stitches is sorry the girl was injured but says she was not bitten while walking past the 15-month chocolate Labrador as she claims, rather because she was too close to it.
"Destiny (Turner) walked over to Schnook and put her face next to the dog's face," Christina Morris said Thursday. "That's when he bit her face."
The girl claims she was walking toward her house, 211 Broadview, about 7 p.m. Sunday when the chained dog leaped on top of her and began biting her face.
Morris says she has told Destiny and other kids in the neighborhood on numerous occasions not to go too near to the dog, which she said was chained to a tree in the rear of the house Sunday.
Morris said she has owned Schnook for five to six months and that he listens to commands.
"He is basically a good dog," she said. "Yes, he can be aggressive at times. Kids in the neighborhood throw rocks at him at times. I think something may have happened at the prior owner's home." Schnook, meanwhile, has been kept at the home of Nick Spelich, 622 Johnson Plank Road, Bazetta. Spelich is Morris' sister's boyfriend.

Most people don’t understand dog behavior because it looks very much like human behavior, but it’s really not. It’s too easy to think they are just people in furry suits. The dog usually comes out on the bad end of that stick.
LOL yes, cookie IS the magic word in our house.
I always find that when someone doesn’t have an answer they mention strawmen. Whatever. If you don’t want to debate that’s fine with me.
I’m really amazed how many people here take the opposite side of that argument, but I would be curious how fast they would scream if it was their kid. Would they really say, “yup, my kid was at fault, shouldn’t have been out walking around the neighborhood and gotten so close to that dog.” I don’t believe that for a moment.
The thing that REALLY irritates me is that idiots like this dog owner give ammo to groups like PETA and HSUS so they can get laws passed so that the rest of us who are responsible for our pets and tighten to noose for the day when it will be almost impossible for us to have them. The day is coming. Heck, I can’t even breed a litter of puppies in Palm Beach county now without having a license ($150 per year, whether I breed a litter every year or not) and that includes allowing them to come in and inspect my home at their will!
Kill the dog, send the owner to jail for a year.
“Kill the dog, send the owner to jail for a year.”<<<<<<
I agree, but why not two years? This dog owner was aware their dog was dangerous, yet allowed the child to play near enough for a tragedy to occur. If it had been a toddler, this would have been a fatality for sure.
Fine with that, I say your dog kills somebody, you die, your dog mauls somebody, the family of the victim gets to beat you within an inch of your life. I’m all for that, this nonsense needs to stop.
You might be on to something there. If they don’t pass some responsible ownership laws soon, I imagine people will be taking it upon themselves to right the wrongs. That’s how I felt when I was attacked by a pack of dogs two months ago. No animal control came to pick up the dogs, and the owners could not be found because the dogs were always running loose. I’ve been jogging through every day to try and see who feeds them so I know who gets the lesson. Rabies shots are painful, and one of the wounds is still open, so I am still angry, of course.
The strawman was asking if I think a 12 year old should be locked up. That was pulled out of nowhere. But to follow the logic on this thread of the people who want to put the dog down, I said we should go after the 12 year old’s parents, because they are responsible.
And maybe people just dont like talking to you because of your pretentious attitude, so they bring up strawmen in hopes you would go away.
I guess you could try. I guess you live in the neighborhood and know more than I do about the case. Or, are you one of those people who just reads an article and suddenly knows everything about the issue or doesn’t want to admit that they spoke out of turn? Whatever. Let me know how it turns out.
Actually, you must like talking to me, because you keep going on and on. Apparently I’m endlessly charming.
Well, Ive only talked with you 3 times. Have a nice day
And, you clearly think you always need to have the last word. :)
Thanks. I just dont see how people can claim that punishing the dog is a way of taking responsibility. But then again, we have a president who thinks you can claim responsibility six weeks after an incident, so I guess it does make sense.
I didn’t think the dog was fenced. Perhaps I am mistaken.
