By her own admission, Chely Wright was a liar.

"My truth is I'm gay," she says. "My truth is that I hid my homosexuality for my entire career."
From the time she was a young Kansan trying to sing her way to stardom, Wright, 39, didn't think country music could handle her secret.
"I lied every day, I lied to myself for a long time and then when I stopped lying to myself, I still did a lot of lying to my fans and there are a lot of lies to my family and to my friends," she says.
"Country music is not cool with an openly gay country music artist," she says. "I read liner notes as if they were bedtime stories; nowhere in there did I read anything about a homosexual."

Maybe her agent told her it would be a good career move.
Back in the day, when country stars saw their records stop flying off the shelf, they inevitably made a “gospel album” to go after a different market segment. You guys may be on to something.
I read a lot of liner notes as well, and there are all sorts of things I never read in there. For example, I never read:
Me and my wife are into light bondage...
My husband likes me to dress up in a stewardess outfit...
I get turned on by flannel nightgowns...
Do you know why you don't read things like that in liner notes? Because people who don't have their entire lives wrapped up in what they do in their sex lives don't feel the need to brag about their bedroom behaviors!
Who freaking cares what you do? But being indescreet does say a lot about you as a person.
She had the song about the bumper sticker for the U.S. Marines on her SUV. The libs trashed her for it. Through the years she has had some minor hits, with the biggest being Single White Female.
The Nashville paper found that the head of her fan club was trying to generate fake demand for the song. (Had it been an anti-war song that would have been celebrated.) One has to wonder in retrospect if Chely wasn’t set up due to the conservative angle of that song. The controversy basically killed her career in Nashville.
A star would denote Reba McIntire, Sara Evans, Faith Hill, Saina (sp) Twain, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, etc. She was a singer who is probably doing casinos now, but she’s is not a star.
Third rate casinos at that!
The decent thing would be for Kenny Chesney to come out as well.
Reminds me of the old joke about being a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Which would describe me, actually.

Aging pop artists do the same thing with a "standards album". Queen Latifa made a decent one. Rod Stewart has had a whole second career doing it. This gal is just trying to find a new way to ring the register. I can't imagine who would have cared if she had just quietly gone lesbo.
