Cheesesteak Pretzel out today

Starting at noon today at Love Park, hundreds of Cheesesteak Pretzels will be handed out for free.

It's part of the rollout of a new kind of hand-held: a cheesesteak baked inside soft-pretzel dough, from Philly Pretzel Factory

This morning, the sandwiches were introduced at almost every store. The chain has more than 100 between New York State and Georgia. (Get 2 for $4 with a coupon found on Page 17 of today's Daily News. Regular price is $3.50, or two for $6.)

Next Monday, every outlet will also serve them up for free between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

It's a twist on the chain's Pretzel Dogs and Spicy Pretzel Sausages - links poking out the ends of golden-brown tubes.

The Cheesesteak Pretzel, though, is totally enclosed, like a knish.

"It's good. . . . It's not messy like a regular cheesesteak," said steam mechanic Bill Toole, 45, of Woodbury, sitting in his truck outside the 16th and Sansom store. "I'm not going to be wearing this all day."

"It's the exact taste" of a regular cheesesteak, said sanitation engineer Aaron Godwin, 18, of Swarthmore. "I like it. . . . There's a lot of cheese in it."

The lunchtime giveaway at Love Park (JFK Plaza), 15th Street and JFK Boulevard, is "while supplies last," said said Marty Ferrill, the Pretzel Factory's vice president of operations.

They are quite a smaller than your regular cheesesteak - about the size of full-size soft pretzel.

"Two might be a lunch," said Toole. "One might be a good morning snack."

For more information, go to the chain's website, www.phillypretzelfactory.com.

Picture with the article, these guys are all over the east coast, NY to GA and it's the first I've heard of them.

Oooooh, that looks good. I wonder if they sell them frozen by mail order. There’s one in Mooresville, but I’d hate myself if I drove an hour to eat something that will probably kill me ....

If it’s anything like their pretzel hotdog, I’ll pass.

Hmmm. That doesn’t sound encouraging. If one doesn’t work, seems like the other wouldn’t, either.

I guess I’ll give it a chance next week when they are giving them away at the local stores. Someone must like the pretzel dogs. They haven’t taken them off their menu.

The one time I went to Philadelphia for a business trip, my colleagues told me I must taste a cheese steak, a soft pretzel, and a Tasty Cake. They were each yummy, as advertised.

But I’m skeptical about combining these iconic foods.

If they are now combining cheese steaks and pretzels, can a cheese (steak) cake be far behind? What about a pretzel cake?

Where will this all lead?

Sorry Philly, but the best cheesesteaks in America are at the end of the AC Expressway at the White House sub shop in Atlantic City. Pat’s IS better than Geno’s, but none compare the the White House, particularly when it comes to the bread.
