The Pacific coastal waters from Santa Barbara to Mexico dumped that juck daily for thousands of years until the drilled and relieved the gas pressure and it still boils up daily but not nearly as much.
In the 40s and early 50s there wasnp[t a beach south of Santa Barbara you couldn’t go on without getting coveered with tar.
It never hurt a thing except being messy.

Not sure what law that is, but BP has been on the news saying that they will pay “all” claims, above and beyond the $75 million cap. Is that good for the stock holders?

I actually am afraid that Shep’s rant may be correct, although I hope it’s an over-reaction. The $75M thing really makes me angry, and apparently one of the companies involved with the rig has been in Houston court trying to consolidate all individual claims so that they will all fall within that limit. In other words, all the fishermen, hotels, and other citizens of the Gulf Coast together would have to split a $75M judgment. I hope that would cover all the damages and destroyed livelihoods, but somehow I doubt it. ;(
Then drill off your coast. I swear, us Texans should charge a heavy tax on all crude oil you Californians suck up at will without producing your own damn energy...

I was wondering how big this oil spill was, so I put electrons to spreadsheet and came up with this:
There are 43,560 square feet in 1 acre.
1 cubic foot will hold 7.5 gallons.
Therefore, 1 acre of land, filled to a depth of 1 foot can hold about 319,000 gallons.
The highest estimate I have seen (so far) is 3.4 million gallons per day being leaked into the gulf. That means that 10.7 acres of land covered to a depth of 1 foot will contain all the oil that is leaked each day.
This has been going on for a little over a month now, so that’s a little over 320 acres. There are 640 acres in one square mile, so in one month, the leak can be contained by covering one half of a square mile to a depth of one foot.
The gulf covers a total of 615,000 square miles.
