Parents in Illinois are outraged over a move by a local high school to scrap its girls basketball team's trip to Arizona over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law.

Emails can be sent to Superintendent George Fornero (gfornero@dist113.org) or if you prefer Suzan Hebson (shebson@dist113.org)

I grew up in Highland Park> The liberal atmosphere is not to be believed. I watched as some of these same oh-so-tolerant people called the police because a black man was reading their gas meters.

Let all these clowns step in the stuff.

Ammunition against them in November.

Arizona's law is overwhelmingly popular and people appreciate seeing a governor and legislature step up and make the hard decisions.

Not only will this blow over, look forward to more states going this route.

Do you still live in the Chicago area? I lived in North Chicago for six years. Now, I live in Northfield.

They were paying their way as it is just buy each girl their own gloves if they don’t already have one, charter a bus and go play. Lets see if the school tries to stop them.

Ms. Hebson is paid $206,319 a year to issue such profound pronunciamentos according to the Family Taxpayers Network teachers salaries report (see it here: http://www.familytaxpayers.org/salary.php

Usually, when such morally superior uplifters as Suzan Hebson issue forth such ukases, there is a hypocrisy to be found nearby.

Such as with the 40% of Chicago Public School Teachers who sing the praises of the CPS system, yet send their own children to private schools. Or with such pro-public education luminaries as Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson, who conveniently send their children to posh and exclusive Sidwell Friends and St. Johns Academy respectively.

But I am happy to report that Suzan Hebson’s Highland Park High School is true to its values.

After encountering a flurry of criticism on the morning radio talk shows and in the blogosphere, the ever-consistent Ms. Hebson announced that hereafter, Highland Park High School would not require proof of legal residency in Highland Park or elsewhere in District 113. Consequently anyone in the world who so chooses, will now be able to get a first class high-dollar education, courtesy of the enlightened, liberal taxpayers of Highland Park.

“We are not going to be like the benighted yahoos of Arizona,” Asst. Supt. Hebson said. “There is no such thing as an illegal student. We are citizens of the world and all are welcome here,” she pontificated.

Asked how District 113 would pay for a massive influx of new students, Hebson said that she would personally take a $150,000 annual pay cut and expected other members of her staff to do likewise.

“And if that is not enough, I’m sure the homeowners of the Highland Park area will enthusiastically embrace higher property taxes to make up any shortfall,” Hebson said.

Hebson said that she was conferring with Highland Park mayor, Michael Belsky, about broadening the initiative to do away with residency requirements for the city’s beaches and public library.

“We are going to be the first city on the face of the planet to truly obliterate meaningless distinctions of geographic residency,” Hebson enthused.

To enroll your children at Highland Park High School for the coming year, call 224-765-1000.

Ask for Suzan Hebson.

Maybe the parents can pay for each of their children, the town provide their transportation and everyone go and have a good time.

There should be no politics in public schools! Period.
Just like they shouldn’t show little kids voting for a president. They should be teaching our children to read, write and do math, as they say. It’s too bad that they spend precious time on things they have no business doing!

Good idea! This is ridiculous. All these girls need to do is sign a waiver if the school is concerned over their safety, and the school would be clear ... these girls worked very hard to achieve the conference title ... my kids have all played sports, and I would be livid over something like this ... poor kids ...

if they raised money explicitly for the trip, isn't it fraud to use the money for anything else? I wonder if they will return the money?

I suggest a web search of the superintendent “George Fornero” to learn about the man who is leading the effort to deny the girls’ basketball team their trip to Arizona.
I am guessing the last thing this man wants is national attention brought to him and his policies, but that is exactly what his actions to deny the girls’ basketball team their trip has done.

yes, I think the parents, relatives, other townfolk should all help out here to get those kids to the games. They have NO RIGHT to keep them from this special event. This needs to be fought. Do it on your own parents, families and friends. Do it on your own.

How to get free childcare for school employees according to Suzan Hebsun...

Launched in 1992 at the urging of district employees with toddlers and preschoolers, the Deer Park child-care center occupies a tucked-away little world of two classrooms just off the high school’s busy main hallway. This program, which blends quietly into school life, serves double duty, providing a learning laboratory for the high school students and a convenient child-care center for families of employees at Deerfield, its feeder elementary schools, and the community.

“For the families whose kids are enrolled, the preschool builds a deeper relationship and a deeper connection to the high school,” says former Deerfield principal Suzan Hebson, now the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “Deer Park and Deerfield become their school. It’s a shared, powerful experience.”

Suzan Hebson - former English Department chairwoman

******

But tossing a high school team into the heated debate has left parents and players baffled and angry.

‘Why are we mixing politics and a basketball tournament?’ said Michael Evans, whose daughter Lauren is a junior on the team. ‘It’s outrageous that they’re doing this under the guise of safety.’

Lauren Evans said she thought the concern was probably that one of the players could get stopped and questioned.

‘It shouldn’t be a problem,’ she said. ‘I don’t think it makes much sense. We shouldn’t be a threat. We just want to play basketball.’

District 113 Superintendent George Fornero declined comment, saying it ‘wasn’t just my decision.’ He referred calls to Hebson.

Hebson said Arizona is off-limits because of uncertainty about how the new law will be enforced. Signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer last month, it makes it a crime to be in the country illegally and requires police to check suspects for immigration paperwork.

Hebson said the turmoil is no place for students of Highland Park High School, which also draws from Highwood.

‘We would want to ensure that all of our students had the opportunity to be included and be safe and be able to enjoy the experience,’ Hebson said of the tournament, which will be played in December. ‘We wouldn’t necessarily be able to guarantee that.’

Asked if there are undocumented players on the team, or if anyone associated with the team is in the country illegally, Hebson said she did not know.

Parents and players interviewed said they knew of no one who fits that description….”

******

“Many of the parents feel that this should be resolved in the judicial court, not the basketball court,” said Cynde Munzer, whose daughter, Lena, is a freshman on the team.

“I disagree personally with the Arizona legislation, but I also feel strongly about young women’s rights,” Munzer said. “They don’t want to get involved in politics.”

Subrina Collier, whose daughter Briana is a junior on the team, said even if someone were worried about presenting immigration papers in Arizona, it should be a personal decision to stay away. She called the administration decision a misplaced political statement.
