Is Wackenhut a good company?

Posted on 05/11/2010 4:45:58 PM PDT by Soothesayer

My brother is thinking about working for the Wackenhut security corporation in Arizona.

I'm wondering if any of the controversy surrounding this company and its prisons are substantiated or simply exaggerated. There have been claims of prison abuse and neglect as well as instances of guards raping female prisoners. I simply don't know if these claims/cases are true.

Can anybody add to this?

The unions representing state prison employees and politically reliable news media put out a lot of negative propaganda about private prisons. Most state prisons are no better and many are worse. Commercial prisons have a contract and are usually held to higher standards. Though most states pay correctional officers more than their private counterparts, state employees are just as prone to corruption because it’s harder to terminate them and they’re part of a bureaucracy that doesn’t have to make a profit or answer to shareholders. Private prisons have a high turnover rate because most people can’t handle the environment. Those who can adapt and perform well can advance quickly.

We contracted Wackenhut Fire Services in Iraq.

I believe they are out of Boca Raton, FL.

You’ll probably get mixed reviews about them but that would be true of a lot of companies like Dyncorps, ITT, KBR, etc.
