Republican senator to fall victim to Tea Party movement

A Republican senator from Utah is set to lose the party's nomination on Saturday and become a high-profile casualty of the Tea Party movement.

After 18 years representing the western state, Bob Bennett, 76, faces the wrath of party activists who think he has drifted too far to the middle ground and become too identified with broken central government.

He will be opposed at caucuses by eight opponents all to his Right politically who have all sought the endorsement of the state's active Tea Party groups.

Under Utah's quirky rules, without 40 per cent of the vote at Saturday's party convention he cannot proceed to a Republican primary in June to decide who will represent the party in November's midterm election.

Whichever Republican is chosen will almost certainly win, as Utah is one of the most solidly Republican states in the US and has not returned a Democrat to the senate since 1977.

I agree, the good thing about the tea party movement is the removal of out-of-touch career politicians.

Cry me a river. Bennett thought he could play with the statists and they just used him.

“fiscally conservative democrats...” Say WHAT?? I seem to remember of few noted PRO LIFE democrats who recently did what ALL democrats (and RINOs) do best...betray their constituents and the American people. There ARE no conservative democrats. And especially not in DC.

In Michigan,--John D. Dingell represents Michigan's fifteenth district in the U.S. House of Representatives. On February 10, 2009, Dingell became the longest-serving member of the House in U.S. history, holding his seat for over 53 years.ABC News: Dingell Becomes Longest-Serving House Member (February 10, 2009)

This is too long. Seems the longer they are in office the more elitist and big government they become.(IMO)

John Conyers
A Democrat, he has served since 1965 . In January 2007, Conyers became chairman of the House Judiciary Committee -

Term limits are one thing, but age limits are another. Some of the least rational thinking members of congress are much younger.

Age has nothing to so with it.

I don't understand all week the snarkey libs have been on TV saying that the tea party is done, ineffective. They say only 27% of Americans back the tea party. Then how can the the tea party's effect any elections or candidates then?

Those who think the tea party's time has come and gone is deluding themselves.

If there are fiscally conservative Democrats and Independents (and there are some), the Tea Party should endorse them as well.

Never, ever, ever. Their first vote is for Pelosi and Harry Reid or whoever wins their party caucus vote. There has not been any Democrat in Congress in a long time who deserves the vote of any conservative. The only Dem at the national level who could be considered conservative that I can think of is Zell Miller. And he was just too stubborn to switch to the Dems, he was a Republican in all but name.

They can endorse in the Dem primary if they want, but they should never endorse a Dem in the general election. They can also withhold endorsement of liberals who call themselves Republican, I have not problem with that.

I've got news for you. Heard on one of the national talk shows the Tea Party did endorse a democrat. As for your never, never comment about the Tea Party endorsing fiscal conservatives no matter what party, if the Tea Party will not do that then it is nothing but the Republican party by a different name. And we all see how little the GOP has produced.

Actually, where I live that is exactly what the Tea Party has shown itself to be. Its endorsement here was for a guy that voted to raise state employee pensions and raise taxes. But, he was the popular choice of the GOP in crowd.

If the Tea Party follows your advise, it is destined for failure.

The scent of power is intoxicating. I am reminded of that WWI song: How you gonna keep ‘em down on the farm once they seen Paree?” It changes them.

Find me a Democratic Congresscritter who is seeking Tea Party support. If one does, the DNC will cut off his money stream.

The tea party is destined for failure if it endorses Dems. It needs to use its influence to keep conservative Republicans in line and to help eliminate liberal Republicans. It need not be a part of the Republican party, just as I am not, but I would never, ever vote for a Dem. The Dems are, in fact, now the Socialist Party. They are not fiscally conservative, and no one who supports their party in any way, shape or form can claim to be fiscally conservative.

Some Republicans are closed socialists, but the base of the party is not, and many, if not most, of the politicians are not socialist or progressive.

Some freepers make a fetish of being "independent" but the facts of life in a big boy world are that there are two parties and there always will be, in a winner take all, non-parliamentary system. The only way for conservatives to have influence is to take over one of those parties. Otherwise, they are destined to be a fringe, loser movement.

In addition, your mistake is that you accept someone who calls themselves the "Tea Party" to actually be a party that represents the Tea Party Movement. There is no Tea Party, it is simply a movement of people who want to restore the constitution and end the takeover of our government by global socialists.

“What good is a RINO when they are window dressed liberals in the first place?

“I.E. Olympia Snowe, who is the best friend of the DNC.”

Well, she is from Maine. They would not elect a conservative there. So Snowe is infuriating but better than a rat. OTOH, having a RINO from Utah is inexcusable.

You may be correct. I’m a fiscal conservative. If a dem is strong minded that way and the republican is not, I’ll vote for them. It is the single most important issue at this point.
