Vacuum Tube. It opened up easy radio and TV communication and was the first to blaze a path into computers. Yes, transistors and later, integrated circuit chips, do the job much better, but it took the vacuum tube to lead the way.

Also magnetic tape, it opened the way for the common person to record and playback music, data,spoken word (and later, video) and so on with relative ease.
