San Francisco Giants will Wear Jerseys "Gigantos"

As there are large protests now in San Francisco against the racial violence that has been ongoing and perpetrated against Asian Americans by black youths, instead I happen to view some local San Francisco television station and they report that the San Francisco “supervisors” are considering having some sort of action/vote/other where the San Francisco Giants baseball team would have to wear jerseys “Gigantos” in protest of the recent Arizona law and to show “solidarity” with “Hispanic immigrants”.

Is this true? I searched the same affiliate web page for that news agency and I could not find any information.

I also entered “GIANTS” in Yahoo Babel Fish to have the word translated from English to Spanish and “Giants” in English translated into “Giants” in Spanish as well. “Giant” singular translates into “Gigante” singular in Spanish. So I am not even sure if the supervisors know that, either…

This is outrageous. If the Giants do this, or if the Diamondbacks or Suns do the same sort of stunk, I swear to God and I am serious I will never attend any of their games either team again.

Cool. They could reactivate Barry Bonds and make it a complete disgrace.

I will never again attend a sports event where a team uses their uniforms to make a political statement (other than basic American patriotism).

I would wait to find out why first.

In know the Tigers do things with their uniforms like this at various times during the season in cluding the occasional El Tigre uniform.

And using a form of ‘spanglish’ will add to the message... how?

Agree with you. I was dismayed when Ozzie Guillen opened up his yap the other day and declared that he's boycotting the '11 All-Star Game in Arizona.

I follow sports to escape. If baseball insists on engaging in social or political activism, I'll go elsewhere for escape.

Just like singers/actors bloviating their opinions. Better consider what percentage of your base you're alienating before you open your mouth and stick your foot in it.

Nope. You’d have to pay another country to take it.

Politics is about polarization and contrast. You want to have clearly defined poles in a spectrum of choice (on policy, on issues, on candidates). While much of the media treat “polarization” in politics as a pejorative - it’s really the point. And truly successful political campaigns (1994 Contract with America, Reagan’s 1984 obliteration of Wally Mondale) are those that turn up the contrast. It seems to me that these little symbolic gestures by businesses in the Southwest (that feel like they must patronize Latinos) are going to reap great benefits for the GOP in November. These are small gestures - but they really don’t go down so well. And that will lead to payback. So, go ahead and ladle it on.

The Giants are in Florida today, so they will probably not wear their “Gigantes” jerseys.

One of my clients at the bank I work for (in Maryland) has begun looking at real estate in Arizona both commercial and residential...he’s had it with Maryland and said he’d been looking for somewhere to move, last week made up his mind on AZ.
